Fire extinguisher system, additional safety pin
After my mishap with the overflowing carb, I decided to install an FIA-approved fire-extinguisher system in the engine bay.
I want to install the pull lever on the dashboard, but would like to add an additional safety pin to it, so no one can pull the lever by mishap. I read a post some time back where someone did the same thing, but of course I forgot to save it. :( I can't simply drill the lever to insert a pin, because the diameter is too small (0.2 inches). Does anyone have an idea? Dan |
If you are referring to a trunk mounted tank with nozzles piped to the engine compartment, the manual actuator that is located on the dash already has a safety pin. The tank also has a 2nd pin but it is removed after the cable linkage is installed. I can send you photos of my install if you like. The manufacturer is Safecraft, they have a large selection.

As with yours, there is a safety pin on the handle of the extinguisher. But since I mounted the tank in the engine bay, I 'll have to remove it once the installation is done. Some of the systems are heat activated I know, hence the engine compartment installation I would think. Mine is in the trunk and piped to the engine compartment. (3 spray nozzles - two on firewall and one on drivers front wheelwell)

The kit I have (Sparco) does not have a safety pin on the T-Handle, none of the one's I could find in Europe do. Since I got it for around $170, I'm just gonna built something myself to secure the handle. It's the same kit we use on our rally car, FIA homologated, so I'm really confident that it's gonna do it's job in case I ever need it. I installed 5 nozzles around the engine bay (normally 4 are enough according to FIA), and in case of discharge, the system will run for at least 25 seconds. That should be good enough. Dan |
