Bigger Air Filter

I have a 427 (482) FE with a Performer RPM intake. I currently have a 9" x 2-7/8 K&N filter with the filter top. I am looking to get more filter on it. What will fit? Is there a known drop base filter that will work?

Back when I was running an 1150 Dominator I used a NASCAR drop base with a K&N Filter it worked very well and cleared the stock hood. It was something like 14" x 3" I think I had to rework the base at the carb mount but it was not too hard.

Bill,
I can't give you a simple answer, but perhaps this will help. ... I faced a similar problem with a non-Cobra. One of the options I considered was a drop base, spun aluminum air cleaner similar to this:

The major considerations are:
  1. The lid has to drop down enough to clear the hood.
  2. The base has to drop down enough to allow a good size air filter element between it and the lid.
  3. The base has to fit around the throttle linkage and other stuff near the carburetor. As Bruce said, you may need to reshape the aluminum base to fit.
  4. The gap between the top of the carburetor and the underside of the lid has to be large enough to allow all that air flowing through the filter to make the turn into the throat of the carburetor.

I talked to a guy a couple of years ago that had an SPF with an FE and he was using one of the aftermarket L-88 Corvette drop bases and it seemed to work well. Like this:

Also, Summit Racing sells a variety of drop bases.

Not cheap, but a polycarbonate base that claims a power increase is worth a look, if you have enough room.
