Coyote power

Any of you guys running a coyote? If so anybody running a 2013/2014 sport shift 6R80 transmission setup?

Mark IV 10-30-2016 05:20 AM

There are several Coyote powered SPFs running around, but I know of none with the 6R80 automatic. I could be done but so far no one has asked for it.

I'v been seriously thinking of this combination. There's a lot of things I like about this trans.

I'm not sure how much power it will hold. All of the supercharger kits say for a manual trans only. You can get beefed up versions for serious power or racing; but they're not cheap at $5K.

Control doesn't look too difficult. Ford now has a power pack that works with the 6R80. And TCI also has a controller that plugs in to the older Ford power pack. The TCI controller also works with their paddle shifter, which is kinda cool (but danged expensive!)

The big swap issue is the shifter. It's pretty tall to fit in the stock console. The only aftermarket part I could find also fits in the factory console. I'm not sure how that would fit in a Cobra.

Ford has been selling a complete package with a Coyote, T-56, and the appropriate power pack. Recently the started selling a similar kit with the 6R80, but I can't find much info about it. What little I did find didn't say anything about a shifter.

Mark IV 10-30-2016 12:31 PM

The shifter is not a big issue. Between aftermarket units or modifying a Ford unit, the controls can be done. We have done a 65-66 Mustang shifter to control an AOD unit (understand that the "drive" dot now becomes "second" and the second gear dot is drive) it can be done.

Add an in tank cooler to the radiator and use the "oil cooler" in the nose as the aux. trans cooler and you are golden.

Ford announced last November 2015 that they would have a new 6 speed padlle shift transmission for the Coyote motor, estimated release was mid Summer 2016, then i was told Aug/Sept and then they told Jay from Vintage that now they can only say the Fall. I got sick of waiting and thats why i put the Vette LS3 PP motor with the proven 6 speed Auto trans in my car. The last time Ford tried this was in the Ford Focus and that transmission couldnt even handle that H.P.

To quote Donald Cheeto "Wrong!" The trans in the Focus is a twin clutch computer shifted manual. Ford has not committed to a similar manumatic for the Coyote.

Didnt say it was the same exact transmission and a twin clutch for a focus was just a bad idea period. If Ford didnt delay the release then i would have one now. Time will tell if it is a success or not.

The height was what I was worried about. My wife cannot drive sticks anymore (no more knees left). She love the 2014 GT I bought her. Until I have the components there is know way to know. I figure it will be somewhat high, but as long as it is a comfortable reach it should prove to be interesting. I was thinking of possibly integrating my spare coyote console, but I still have along way to go, and many other projects to accomplish.

These folks have some neat interface items for the 6R80, Console paddle Shifter, ECU& Harness, SBF motor mount plates, plus some high failure rate items to look out for. They also point out the differences in the F150 vs Mustang and have adapters for the shifter since the F150 case does not have a mounting boss.

PBH (does Fox body and GT500 6R80 swaps) has a bunch as well and should be able tell you if the the Driveshaft length is greatly affected

I've never heard the 6R80 shift with my own ears but the I know the Paddle shift 4R70W in the Backdrafts that Vintage Motorsports build are pretty nice.

That is my concern as well. I'm tempted to buy a stock shifter off e-bay just to play with it.

74proii 11-01-2016 03:37 PM

That PBH stuff looks like a good way to go. I like keeping all ford when I do conversions. I was wondering about the ABS setups. I've seen a few "kits" for the tranny around like on Ebay. I was Thinking that for height, the stock shifter shaft looks like it could be shortened a bit as well to help the overall height issue.

I am thinking about building a backdraft with paddle shifters and coyote motor. Has anyone fit a supercharger on a coyote under a cobra hood?

csx4910 11-22-2016 04:57 AM

I had one many years ago with paddle shifters and a Ford 514 crate motor and I have to say I miss that car. My wife actually misses the car as she could drive that one. I know a modern engine in amCibra is part sacreligousmbut it makes for cheap horsepower when you boost them. Too bad a voodoo motor wouldn't fit in a cobra bay.

The Vintage Motorsport I had posted 2 posts above has that configuration.
Cashburn could help you on the details / do / don't info I'm sure.

If it were for a BDR or the like it will fit, same basic architecture as the Coyote. And that would be extremely cool in a Cobra, 520 normally aspirated HP @7500rpm! That puppy screams.

csx4910 11-22-2016 06:52 AM

You aren't kidding. I have one in
My Shelby GT350 and have already seen visitors of a supercharged voodoo motor( although I doubt one would fit in a backdraft and stick good scoop) that motor is a scream in a 3700 pound car, I can only I Imagine what it would be like in a 2400 pound car. The question is whether to put it in a backdraft or a superformance

csx4910 11-22-2016 06:59 AM

Anyone know if ford isn't offering yet as a crate motor?

lovehamr 11-22-2016 07:26 AM

Here's an article on that very subject.

They won't release the crank. The auto powerpack still does not exist. To get the coyote with a 6 speed auto Ford setup we just have to use the first gen engine. If you a supercharging it then no big deal.

Articles about these offerings are generally all vaporware.

Jac Mac 11-22-2016 02:05 PM

Going to be interesting to see how the aftermarket deals with the crankshaft subject, lot of counterweight so no real weight advantage, more of a marketing exhaust note thing. IMHO
