Was under the car and just wondering what this hunk of metal with the hole and the U-shape is? It doesn't look like it does anything and there seems to be a sharp edge on one side like maybe a piece broke off. I don't think so, but want to make sure.

It is part of a bracket used on the VW that the SPF rack comes from. They do not cut it off but on the SPF it is vestigial and not used.

Agree w/ Mark IV.
I've cut it off with the rack in the car and another time with the rack out. Big surprise, it's way easier to remove with the rack out of the car.
