Fuel gauge

My fuel gauge stopped working and would only go to 1/4 full, even with a full tank. I thought the problem was in the sending unit so I replaced it today. It now goes to a little less than 1/4 full. Could my gauge be the problem?

Thanks

Lou1119,

I thought someone who really knows what they're talking about on the topic might have responded by now. However, in case it is of any help, the following is a post from another site from someone who seemed confident in their knowledge on the matter and at least may offer some thoughts for your testing on the 1/4 tank read issue.

Needle pegs full or past full – Break in the fuel sender wire (Tan) or tank’s ground wire is disconnected

Needle pegs empty or past empty – Break in the Gauge’s ground connection (under the dash)

Needle’s stuck in one place – Break in the Gauge’s 12v supply

Needle only moves to ¼ full – The resistor on the rear of the gauge is bad or has ground out to the side of the gauge housing.

Best of luck. Brent

When you replaced the sending unit did you adjust the range of motion of the float for your tank?

If you disconnect the sending unit and ground the disconnected wire going to the gauge, your gauge should go to full. If it does, your gauge is ok. If not, the gauge is bad.
