Mini High Torque Starter
 
My Superformance has a Roush 402 in it and it's in need of a new starter.

What are recommendations (part #s please if you have it) for a good and reasonably priced mini high torque starter that's a direct (easy) bolt in.

If you know who sells them in Canada even better but not a prerequisite.

I found the best deal at Speedway motors in Nebraska for the Powermaster starter for a sb ford. Works perfectly.

I thought the starter was experiencing heat soak because it would start like a champ when cold but barely turn over (and not start) when hot. But today it wouldn't crank when cold. Back to square one.

I bought a power master for my FE, and the housing wasn't machined correctly, the drive gear didn;t engage the flywheel ring gear appropriately, almost ruined the ring gear.

I'd get a hi-torque starter that was rebuilt from a factory starter housing, then you're pretty confident it's going to fit.

It's been hit and miss for me using aftermarket speed equipment. Their standards are not that great at times.

I had a similar experience last year - turned out the problem wasn't a failing starter, it was the Optima Yellow Top. Get your battery tested before you replace the starter.

Double check the ground from the battery to the frame. The end lug is under stress and will often fail. When cold and draw is low, OK, when hot the draw exceeds the wire capacity and NO start!

Summit Racing sells this Powermaster mini starter for Ford 289/302/351W for $146.99. Nice price for a 160 ft-lb starter. Powermaster makes excellent starters. All they sell are starters and alternators, so they're specialists. Shipping to the US lower 48 states would be free. Don't know about Canada, but it's got to be a whole lot cheaper than I pay to have equipment shipped to me in Hawaii. ;)

Turns out the battery needed replacing.
