rear main seal 351

How hard is it to change the rear main seal (351) in a Superformance, also has a scatter shield. Thanks. Can anyone on Long Island NY recommend someone to have it done.

If I’m not mistaken, there are two different rear seal designs. One is accessible when you remove the oil pan and then remove the rear crank journal. The other requires pulling the transmission and flywheel. Both will require some special tools I believe. I also think some engine builders convert the 1st type above to the 2nd type....

depends on the block. Older stock blocks have a 2 piece seal. It can be changed by dropping the pan, and the rear main cap. The only specialty tool needed is a small screwdriver.

Newer stock and all aftermarket blocks have a one piece seal. You have to pull the trans and clutch to change it. You also need a special seal driver. You do not need to drop the oil pan or remove the rear main cap.

Both seals, when installed correctly, will last just about forever. Every oil leak from anywhere on a SBF shows up on the front of the block plate. It looks for all the world like a RMS leak, when it could be from a valve cover, or a fuel pump cover.

Block is a DART block so assuming one piece seal, the tranny/engine will have to come out. Also doing some sorting out and some of the oil may be coming from the valve covers. Hope fully the main seal leak may not be as bad as first thought, so tried an additive Blue Devil and hoping that has some positive results. Being new to Superformance where is the best place for parts ie ignition switch?

We can supply parts. I can give you a NAPA number for the ignition switch.

So I did some warranty work on a customers Superformance car-Roush 427 ( Dart Block). I removed the transmission tunnel, pulled the tranny out the top Supported the back of motor first with tall jackstands. then removed bellhousing, clutch, flywheel and starter. This gives direct access to the rear main. Simple process, I had no special driver just worked it in slowly then reassembled. Time wise I think it was a long day. Removing the tunnel and doing the clean up takes time.
