TKX Retainer OD?
Hi All,
Can anyone give me the retainer outside diameter on a TKX? I need to see what size reducer bushing to use on my QuickTime bell housing. One gentleman on here said he used the silver one. Just want to verify for sure before I locktite it in place to indicate. I called Holley and they couldn’t find anything listed on the internet either, not sure why it’s such a big secrete, lol Thanks David |
Just slip it over the trans first....
I have never Loctited one of those in and I would make it so that you can get it out easily because there's a chance you'll have to remove it to dress the powdercoat in that bore. |

The BH bore is free from any powder coat. |
If the adapter ring just falls in, it's not right. It shouldn't be a press fit either, but should be a slight interference fit.

David, so I checked and it seems tremec still uses the same input shaft bearing retainer on tko and tkx input shafts. The retainer od you are looking for I assume is this one ?

Ok so for the 429 BB Ford bell housings, my Tremec TKO ( and the TKX) input shaft bearing retainer OD looks to be 4.8500 nominal. I’ve seen the same size quoted for the big block Top loader input shaft trans so it makes sense.
Back during my build when I realized I needed a choke ring I didn’t think I could find one so I drew one up and was ready to have a buddy CNC it, but common sense prevailed, and I called McLeod , they said yup , we have the one you need! Here is the pic with caliper on it measuring 4.8480. blykins is exactly right, it’s a small interference fit nice and snug. I custom made washers used beneath the 4 mounting bolts to hold the choke ring in place. I could have glued it in with lock-tite but didn’t. My setup has a McLeod bolt on HTOB and thus I removed the Tremec bearing retainer which was handy for answering your question |

That crazy diameter isn't listed anywhere on the internet, :-( Now I'm waiting to hear back from the Holley tech gurus for the type of fit the ring should have with my BH opening. David |
You don't have to wait on them, it needs to be an interference fit. Otherwise, there's no use in dialing in a bellhousing. If it's a slip fit/sloppy fit, your trans is not going to be on the centerline each and every time.

Maybe I shouldn't have scraped of the powder coating on the inside of the bore off. That would have given me a closer fit. I don't think it is good to have the mating surfaces powder coated, seems like it could cause some R/O problems if the thickness isn't exactly uniform. I'm beginning to feel I should have spent my money on a different brand, but they were highly recommended one here. |
