Tach is on, then off, then on, then off for good I have Superformance #633 built in 1999. 351 Windson, stroker. 23,000 miles. It has an old style Smith Tach. About 4 years ago the tach failed to work about 5% of the time. About 2 years ago it was up to 15% of the time. Late last year It went to 100% gone. I looked for loose wires and checked all of the ground wires I could find to make sure they had good connections, but found no issues. Do Smith tachs slowly go bad, or do I more likely have a wiring problem? |

When mine did that, it was a loose connection from the tach to the msd ignition box mounted in the passenger footbox. |

Actually, a broken tach is better than a working tach. When the tach is working, it clutters up the car and the driver's mind with additional data, most of which is superfluous but the driver wants to reconcile. As a result, his attention is diverted from driving the car to reconciling superfluous data with his then current driving obligations. |

Unless you're racing and then the tach matters and the speedometer is irrelevant Which is why the tach is in front and the speedo off to the side. |

 Correcto mundo, Tony! |

Check for lose wires connection |

With a car of that vintage, you may also have a tach adapter under the dash. Blas |
