Watkins Glen Vintage races in a Superformance

Several Superformance and Shelby Mustang owners got together for some great driving at the 2006 Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix. A great time was had by all who attended!!

Took a couple of short videos as we lapped the original Grand Prix street course on Friday afternoon.

A great video, short but sweet. Car sounded awesome and no wind noise or that #%@$ &* background music that always drowns out the car.

Thanks for sharing.

Watkins Glen Rides

Awesome, altough a bit short, but awesome just the same. Makes me want to go out and ride mine right now.

Very nice videos, Jim.

Sorry that we din't run into each other that weekend. Maybe next year.

Looks like you guys had a great time too.

Cheers!
Dave

THAT was such a fun weekend! I could do that every weekend!
Nothing better than having the blessing of the local P.D. to triple speed limits.
LOL
JB :)

Points will be deducted from your weekend if you were actually not on the race course.

If you listen closely to the first video, you can hear the Shelby GT500 (stroked 427FE) that was running right behind me as he downshifts for the first turn (the crowd was yelling "Cobra" as we went by). You can then hear his front tires protesting as he tried to match our speed in the second corner :D

I was (pleasantly) suprised at the speeds we ran on some parts of the old course!

Beautiful scenery, awesome cars and owners, and TWO race courses (old street course and new course on the hill)!!! Watkins Glen is truely (and historicly) the "home" of American Road Racing. I believe that the original street course is now listed in the Historic Registry.

Hi Jim!
I needs mo' video! Do you have any more from that weekend???

Jim Kellogg 10-12-2006 08:34 AM

Hi, JB
Wish I had more video from that weekend!! My passenger had a digital camera, but didn't have enough memory to be able to record much video.

It did pick up the sound pretty good, though :D
My "little" motor runs good, but sounds even better

There is a new SPF owner in the Corning, NY area. Don P finished up his new SPF the other week ("mild" 460 from Mickey Marollo Racing Engines) and had his car here at the Toyota dealership for NYS inspection and final prep. I gave him a (fast) ride in my SPF while we were working on his car. He then proceeded to put several hundred miles on his new SPF last weekend!!!

Hopefully next year we can get together and run a session on the track at Watkins next year (John M..... please keep us posted on driver events for 2007!!!)

Anyone else have some video to share?

Open tracking Watkins Glen

Here are some threads started about driving Watkins Glen.

. Some guys are track guys and some are not. If all you like to do is cruise and show your car than good for you. Don't go to the track and embarass yourself and put other drivers in danger because somebody told you that you "have to track your car". Over the yearsI have tried to talk guys into open tracking with little success and now I realize that some people are just not comfortable at high speed and should just stay off the racetrack. If your not comfortable at 100mph+ that's fine. There are plenty of cruises and cars shows to attend.

For me the smell of 110 octane leaded and burning brake pads is where it's at.

I was planning to go in August. Ended up having to take care of some business :(
Wasn't it like 100plus degrees that week?
Was thinking a "cool suite" would be a good idea?
Thanks
JB

Jim Kellogg 10-12-2006 10:26 AM

Thanks John, RacerX
You have probably pushed at least a couple of SPF guys over the edge.... Wouldn't be suprised to see at least a couple of novice Cobra drivers at next year's Apex school(s) at The Glen.
Keep us posted as to the 2007 schedule.

JB,

Cool suits are great, but not really needed for OT. You just need to stay hydrated.

Yes, it was hot, but I think it was actually hotter at SAAC 31 this year. No need to worry, I brought the offical Club Cranky kiddie pool in case folks were nearing heat stroke, we stayed cool and had garages which helped a lot.

Plus, beers afterwards in the pool at The Seneca Lodge REALLY cooled us down.

Jim,

There is no better track to learn on the at the Mother of all road race courses, The Glen. If you can get Roger as an instructor its an added bonus. I cut my teeth in a Cobra back in 1997 and try to do it as much as financially possible.

JCoop 10-12-2006 11:41 AM

Nice video, Jim. I'll have to make the trip next year.

You also have another new SPF owner up there, (Pound Ridge). He just acquired one from No. Carolina and is in the process of changing his windshield glass and regstering the car. I'll give him your e-mail addy.

The car in front

Jim Kellog,
Nice car in front of you on the clips.
Errol

Jim Kellogg 01-14-2007 08:18 PM

Errol,
Good to hear from you!!!

Jeez, I never could quite keep up with you :)
(never knew when you were going to step on it - my reflexes must be getting slow...)

You have a great car, with a great history (Bob Olthoff's personal SPF)

Hope to "catch up" with you again this year,
Jim
