Power Steering on SPF?
Has anyone put pwr steering on their car? I know there is a kit out there somewhere, but haven't heard any reviews yet.

James, I've seen an FFR with a nice set-up. Most of our cars do not offer power steering because the short wheelbase does not necessitate the need. I used to have the same mindset until I put more miles on my car. If anything, the firmer steering helps me to keep the car straight and doesn't promote an over-reaction when correcting under hard acceleration or coming out of a corner a little too hot.

Ya, I was thinking it might have a regulator of some sort. Dial up a little more ease of turning during autocross and then dial it out when I am on the streets... I have not needed it myself yet, but I wanted to see if anyone had it anyway.
I have driven an FFR with pwr steering. It also had a really close steering ratio in it, thing turned on a dime... not like these truck turning radius's that us SPF owners have to endure...lol. James |
James, there is an adjustment provision on the front of the steering box that allows you to fine tune the "feel". It's basically a tensioner on a nylon ball that is inside. Go too tight and you might have trouble steering. After a car is broken in, sometimes an ever-so-slight turn on this tensioner will tighten up a loose steering feel. That's pretty much all that you can do with the stock SPF rack.
When you consider that the Cobra was meant for a track circuit and not necessarily for the street, the non-too-friendly turning radius of our SPFs is actually closer to what you would want at the track anyways. At least that's how I justify it and I'm sticking to my story. :D |
The company KRC makes a variable pump might just work for you….gets stiff at high RPM but is very loose at low RPMs.

I received information recently about a retrofit power steering modification for the Superformance Mk III. It was a kit that went for around $3600. I'll have to dig it out. SCOF may have sent it.

Gee...take a crack at buying Webers or add a power steering rack. Tough choice. |
3600... is that rubels, or pesos? Damn... I think I will just get a gym membership and lift weights so I get stronger or just suck it up... yep, I am gonna just suck it up. I could almost buy a Miata to do my autocrossing in for that much.
BTW, I don't want to sound like I am an autocrosser... I am a wanna be... but its like skiing... if you go out there with the best equipment and don't do well, people still think you know what your doing. James |
See....

powersteering
has anyone seen a power sidecurtain yet?
|
James,
What kind of rack do you have....mine is a mustang two rack and the KRC pump is bolt on .....well almost nowhere near $3600.00....for us in Canada that represents:confused: half a million:LOL:  |
As best I can tell the typical cobra owner wants every last horsepower going to the rear wheels. Why would you waste any turning a power steering pump? Even my fifty some year old wife has no trouble steering the car.

Unless you have a lot of Downforce...... then power steering is a Blessing....

I have power on my car and it's great, Dennis has it adjusted so in slow driving and turning it works great and when gong fast and tracking it is hardley there. Also price wes 2500 installed.

so what is the original SPF rack out of >? -- i see audi markings on the clamps... wouldnt the normal thing be to source the audi-vw rack with the same specs but with power ports and figure out what kind of pressure it needs to operate >?
Saving say 2000$ of that 3600..... --Steve |
Steve,
I was talking to SPF a couple of months ago on the steering. It is Audi. Ed |
well -- let me peel some part numbers and do some app sluthing.

Electronic power steering
I have been thinking about this for a while now.I don't really need the power steering ,but it would be nice.i think that this would be the simples t and cleanest way of adding to a Cobra

The only thing I hate about the idea is that I would have to start it up every time to move it, where now I can push it.
