What brand steering column is in my car ?

SPF 13xx

I ordered a 9-bolt Moto-Lita steering wheel and boss adapter from Finishline not knowing if I have a Ford or GM column, or even possibly something else. Finishline had to make some phone calls to Superformance (maybe dynamic) and they said it was a Ford product. Well, it doesn't fit...

I hope I'm not chasing my tail attempting to replace my 6-bolt with a 9-bolt wheel. In my mind, that shouldn't be a problem.

Anybody else been down this road ?

Finishline is closed until next week, so hopefully someone here can help!

I think it is a VW part. I know the turn signal lever is from VW so I would assume the whole assembly is. Call lance and Hillbank Motors in California, he could tell you.

the earlier cars had a different hub assembly and different moto lita steering wheels . my old 156 steering wheel is attached with a large single nut in the center - under the center trim cap. other wheels had a 6 or 9 bolt wheel with no center nut attachment . not sure what is ford or gm, just know different years had different hub/ stg wheel attachments and they are not easily interchangeable . i tried to buy a take off wheel from a spf dealer and it would not fit my early car without a new hub adaptor- so i passed . the turn signal unit is from a 60s vw bug fyi . rack is vw also i believe but later model year. columns ? a mystery to me . bill

Thanks for the input guys....

The steering "hub" I have is a single nut design on a tapered and splined shaft if that helps.

Since the hub adapter that Finishline sent me is a Ford product, and it doesn't fit, I'm inclined to believe the column is a VW product.

So my question now is who, if anyone, has an adapter to fit a 9 bolt Moto-Lita to a VW steering column ?

I will start with a call to Lance at Hillbank. Thanks for the tip!

I just bought a new wheel from fininish line, a 6 bolt to replace a 6 bolt. It fit perfect. They have wood and leather in 6 bolt patterns 14 and 15", why are you changing to 9 bolt? The steering is VW. I've had mine all apart.

Tom,

I'm switching simply because I like the look of the 9 bolt wood wheel with the outer ring better than the leather wrapped 6 bolt wheel I have now. If this proves to be a real pain, then I'll drop the idea and just get a wood 6 bolt wheel....

I know Moto-Lita makes adapters for VW's, but the question I need answered is what model V-Dub is my column from ?

Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction!

I have a steering column question too. I'm planning to install a reall nice Lecarra Cobra style wheel.. but was wondering what model hub adapter I would need. Anyone have any idea what column would be in my 2001 SPF?
