SPF Smith Temperature Gauge replacement

I'm trying to replace the Temp gauge; but the gauge hits the steering column when I try to remove the gauge. Has anyone replaced the gauge on an SPF. Need help.

Oil or water temp gauge? I've replaced my oil temp gauge twice with no interference problems. I just looked at my instruments and the water gauge has less clearance from the steering column, so I'll bet that's your problem. For what it's worth, my approach would be to remove the steering wheel and slide the hub and turn signal ring up to allow enough clearance to pull the gauge. Easy to do - just pry off the center badge (use wood or plastic so you don't mar the aluminum), and then remove the 15/16 nut that holds everything on. I think at this point stuff can be slid forward on the steering column to give extra clearance for the gauge to be pulled. But since I've never done it, I may be leaving something out. Should be obvious once you get the wheel off.

And good luck with the new gauge.

I have replaced all those worthless gems at least once. Once you get the back off it will come straight out and up.

Got a bigger hammer! I had to use more force to get it out. Small scratch on turn signal housing; but it can be rubbed out. Thanks.

water temp gauge replacement

I have gone through two of the Smith gauges, and finally went with an Autometer. When I went with the Autometer, I took the silver bezal off the autometer, painted the orange needle white, should have Dremeled off the tail of the needle to match the Smith gauge, put the chrome bezel off the Smith gauge on the Autometer, and forced the assy back in, as you noted. But now I have an Autometer gauge in there that can't be noted as "not orignal" on my original SPF
