Mallory Distributor
Just wanted to give you a heads up.
My car died on Saturday and had to get towed home. I found the 1/8" roll pin for the distributor gear had been sheared. It appears that this is a problem due to high volume oil pumps. Mallory is going to 3/16" roll pins on there race distributors and list it also as a fix in there tech section. I pulled the distributor tonight, drilled it out and installed the 3/16" roll pin. I hope this will help someone else, and keep them from being towed. Thanks, Ken M 2560 Roush 402 R w/Mass-Flo fuel Injection (the Mallory distributor is part of the Mass-Flo fuel injection kit) |
Same thing happened to my Mallory Unilite. I was using a standard volume standard pressure pump.
Take a close look at the bottom of your gear. Do you see a wear mark on it? The gear is coated with something black, so if it's not completly black, it's rubbing. That slight bit of rubbing on the bottom of the gear pressed upwards just a little bit. Eventually, that upward pressure sheared the pin. Not related to the oil pump at all. Before you re-install the gear, grind off that little step on the bottom. |
Mine sheared too. The pins are just not big enough, so I put in a bigger chebbie pin. Problemo solved.
The worst part was sitting on the side of the road for 2 hours while my buddy went and got the trailer. LOL |
.....misery loves company. When mine sheared I looked at using a 3/16 roll pin however it was decided that it would weaken the dist shaft. I replaced the high volume oil pump with a standard. Mallory has been making distributors for quite some time using 1/8 roll pins as do many manufacturers.... most problems seem to be related the the high volume pumps. I'm curious if they, along with using a 3/16 hole, designed a more robust shaft to support it.
