Superformance bug screen
Can anyone recommend where to obtain a bug screen for a superformance and the related cost?
Thanks |
Olthoff Racing, in Charlotte is the originator of the screens for SPF cars. Bob (now deceased) and Dennis made up some samples several years ago and had more made by a local fabricator. Theirs are stainless steel mesh, with a molding surrounding the screen and mounting tabs welded on. Very nice quality. Contact Dennis Olthoff at (704) 647-9924.
They also have a similar screen for your oil cooler opening that "spring fits" in front of the cooler. Hope this helps...I've had my Olthoff made screens for almost 6 years now..! |
I second Flying Freddie's comments. Call Dennis.
They look good and its easy to get the bug off the screens. |
I odered mine from SPF back east. You just velcro it on. Can't remember, but I think it was around $50 or so. It would be easier to go to a window screen shop and make one. The frame is aluminum with two center braces and heavy metal screen.

Speaking of BUGS. My windshield looks like a bug massacre every time I take it out. I guess it is because there is not much angle on it. Needs to be cleaned almost every time I take it out.
I use a wet rag and a razor blade for the real chunky ones. For the nose, a good coat of wax helps with removing them. |
CBattaglia,
I use 3m glass cleaner and spray a nice coating of foam on the windshield and let it sit for a minute or so and them wipe off. It is a lot easier if you wait a little bit before wiping. Bill |
a coat of RAIN-X on the windshield besides making any rain water disappear over 30 mph, makes it a lot easier to remove dead bugs .
bug screens can also be as simple as going to your hardware store and buying screen for screen doors. cut to fit and use velcro ,stapling the velcro to the screen . same with the oil cooler cover . however, that type of screen offers no protection for any rocks/stones - but does keep the bugs off the radiator and makes it easy to remove the screen mat to wash off the bugs . so, if ya want something more substantial, then get the Olthoff screen . Dynamic offers a different style screen, but similar in appearance with its aluminum framing . also, velcro applied . Bill |
Second to Bill's Rain-X on the windscreen...works wonders on bug guts making them MUCH easier to remove.
But, also....a little known fact....any "detail spray" - such as Meguiar's, or Zaino Z6 - when applied to your windscreen does pretty much the same as Rain-X. These sprays may be more temporaray than Rain-X, but they perform pretty much the same. Water will still bead off the windscreen, and the remains of Kamikaze bug attacks don't stick as much either. :D By the by....you know what the last thing is that goes through a bug's mind when he hits your windscreen...? ...his asshole...! |
windex?
doesnt good old fashion windex or some other household glass spray work? i just spray the windshield, let it soak in, then all the bugs come off easy. no razors or scraping. as long as i do it after the ride (not a day or two later)

Might depend on just what kind of "BUGS" you are hitting. I've see some flying bugs down south with propellers and landing lights I think...Not like them little "SKETERS" up north.....
