SPF owners
Folks, I have been looking for a used cobra for about a year now. I think I have found one that is right for me. It is a SPF # 18?? from 2005. It has the usual SPF options, and a 351W from Performance Enginering. This is a one owner car with abot 5,000 miles. It has not been wrecked, and looks to be taken well care of. I have asked the owner all questions I could think of, are there some standard questions I should ask? The only thing I have left to do is go see it in person. The car is blue with steel grey stripes, and is located in Cinn. I would really appreciate any advice.

I would question the car #18 from 2005. Last i recalled they were at car# in the #2000 range in 05.

I agree; be leary. I would think #18 would have been built in the mid to late 90s? Nothing wrong with having an early SPF, as long as the seller is forthcoming in providing correct build information.

Duplicate the car new for $52,900, you should be paying about 45k for that car with 5K miles

Guys, I think he means the car number is in the 1800's (ie: 18??), not #18.

I have car # 1938 from 2004 so I doubt an 18## car would be from 2005. It's possible I suppose, but I would suggest you verify that info. Also, some PE engines have been proven to not be built to specifications, so once again, do your due diligence.

A #1800 series car could possibly be titled as a 2005 model, but most were 2004 models. Having the entire VIN# would be helpful. 2005's started around #1990. But remember, actual production date, time for transportation across the big pond, and the time spent in dealer inventory may effect the model year designation of the car. Major changes to the cars between car's #1800's and #1900 would be mainly the revision to the wiring harnesses. But the differences there are EXTREEMLY MINOR. Does Ohio title the car based on the year of the engine block maybe? Anyway, mechanically, there is little difference in the design of the car. A new roller with anything short of a cheapo Ford crate engine and used Tremec (and YOU installing it) won't get close to your quote, Max. You still have local sales taxes, DMV fees, registration, etc. Any SPF done correctly will run in the high 50's to start.
You are correct on the used SPF with 5K for $45K...those deals can be found....during the dead of winter. Sean, as far as the # of the car you're looking at, I think you're referring to #18xx, which may place it into '03-04 territory. Check the top flange on the headers (at the cylinder heads)...there is date stamp there (day/month/year) and that is somewhat of an indicator of the 'approximate' build time (my car, #747, has a date code of Feb 2000 as a reference, though it could have been built/assembled as early as Dec 1999). Check the exterior paint really well. The finishes are awesome, but there have been some instances of bubbling and most owners had them warranty repaired (the dealer network stands behind their product quite well). -Dean |
Guys: I don't know if 2005 is that far off for a number 1800 car. -Easy to look up; just check with SPF. I have car 1245 and it was delivered in early 2002. I would guess most 1800 cars were delivered in '04.
nsurenceman- Is the car being sold by a private seller, or is it at Dynamic Motorsports (in Cinci)? I know Eric @ Performance Enginering and he is a top-notch builder that stands behind his stuff. Is the 351w in the car a custom built engine by PE or is it a Ford crate motor that they simply installed in the car? |

SPF 1415 left Dynamic Reno as a roller on 06/18/2002 so I would estimate an 1800 number chassis would likely by a 2004 build. Would advise do a search here and on other similar forums for PE engine discussions and read back several years just for info, good luck on your decision :) :)

Guys, my mistake I checked my notes it is SPF# 1995 (2005). Thanks for all the replies. From what I've read here today, the price looks right. Again thanks for the help. The car is being sold by an individual that purchased it from the company mentioned above. P.E. did the engine install, a FMS crate engine. Dyno was around 400HP not RW, but plenty for my first endeavor.
