Tremec TKO 600 and Pro 5 Shifter
Hi Everyone -
My engine and trans should be ready within a week. One question i wanted to pose to the group who has had experience with the TKO 600 and the Pro 5Shifter - is it worth upgrading to the Pro 5 prior to the install? Does it make that much more of a difference? I have experienced the 2-3 missed shift in some past test drives but attributed that to my lack of familiarity with the car. Are the new TKO's improved enough with the stock shifter that the Pro 5 upgrade isnt necessary anymore? I plan on using the stock superformance shift handle and wondered if any mod's need to be done if using a Pro 5. Thanks for any opinions or comments. (my search for "Pro 5" didnt turn up that much). |
Pro 5.0
Eric,
I Had The Same Question When I Got My Car Also. I Must Say It Is Easier To Do The 2-3 Shift After 2500 Miles Than It Was At The Beginning. I Would Also Like To Know If It Is A Worthwhile Upgrade Also. I Think The Trans Has Loosened Up A Bit Due To Break In. The Tko 600 Works Great Other Than The Occasional2-3 Missed Shift , Good Luck, Alot Of Work To Do This Winter For You. Mh |
I can't comment on the pro 5 but I can tell you that the Jordan shifter available from second strike is a big improvement over the stock shift handle.

we have the pro 5/0 but its all so new still it doesnt like the 2nd to 3rd if im running it hard:eek: the tranni guy on here said these 600s dont like to shift at high rpms so, i guess its ok when going slow, we will see when i get some miles on her...WB3

Many of us were looking for improvements in shift quality upon purchase, however, most of us have accepted the TKO-600 as a tranny with miles turns into a good tranny. I do fast deliberate shifts and only twice have had the pleasure of shining the cogs going into 5th.

The pro 5.0 shifter, along with the other aftermarket shift tops will improve the 2-3 shifts slightly. The main thing they improve is the actual length of the throw, they shorten the distance it takes for the transmission to shift into gear by roughly 30%. jimig@standardtransmission.com

The springs in the Pro shifter are weaker then the springs in the Hurst shifting assembley that comes on the TKO......
|
if the unit comes with Hurst shifter, then switching to a Pro shifter will accomplish nothing.

Thanks all...looks like I'll spend the money on the Jordan shifter instead.

Eric,
Don't waste your money. They shift fine with the shifter that comes with the transmission. Bill |
I have a new TKO 600 in my car now... I don't/haven't experienced any of the problems/complaints mentioned. 2-3 shift is silky smooth, shifter throw is short and precise at all RPM ranges. 1st gear is sometimes a little stiff but better than any of the gears in my Viper...
I have approx. 500 miles on the car/tranny I would highly recommend the TKO with it's stock Hurst shifter. Now the earlier TKO's (3550) may be another story... |
As I understand the new TKO 600 is to be driven carefully for the first 500 miles with lower RPM and easy shifts. I've found the recommended lubricants work well. They shift like butter if you break them in properly. I have the shifter that came on the transmission. Be sure the shift lever into the car is bolted tight. Having it loose will cause a delay in movement and produce poor shift results.
Here's a typical 2 to 3 shift @ 6800 rpm with the basic shifter components. Note that it takes a little over a 1/4 second. I wouldn't change it unless someone was able to show me data for a faster shift. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...ft_TKO_600.jpg |
Tremec TKO 600 vs Tremec 3550...
#770 came with a Tremec 3550, which is a nice transmission, agreed. But, the addition of a Pro 5 shifter made it even nicer, I think. My only complaint was with the 3.73 PosiTrac rear end, at 70 mph, you were doing 3000, or so, rpm. Not dangerous, by any means, but loud. Plus...you basically had no first gear. First gear was from here to there, and there was the other side of the intersection. Clearly, the 3.73 rear end was not an ideal choice for a 2500 lb vehicle.
But, as was the rage a couple of years ago, I upgraded to a TKO 600, with a .82 overdrive. At the same time, I switched to a Torsen 3.27 locker rear-end, from the 3.73 that came installed. Now...I had first gear back...and at 70 mph, I'm turning a little less than 2600 rpm....much more civilized. Plus, the TKO has no need for a Pro 5 shifter. The shift is smooth and positive using the factory installed shifter. I retained my "Jordan shifter"...which is really just the lever and nothing more...but it feels nice - your hand falls right to it - and since it's shorter it has a physically shorter amount of travel. But...all in all...I think you'll be pleased with the TKO 600, and there's really no need for a Pro 5 shifter. Hope this helps... |
I've got the TKO 600 with a Steeda shift kit (with the stock shift arm). I've found that if I really force it, I'll miss the shift from second to third from time to time.
Seems to be a fine line. Under acceleration, I need to apply enough pressure to quickly shift from second to third, but I can't force it. I think I read on one of the posts that you need to be smooth and guide the shifter and let the transmission do the work. Hard to do when the adrenalin is pumping :D . It's probably like the yips in golf...you start over thinking the shift  . |
