SPF door latch pull cords?
 
Are these functional, or do the anchor screws pull out? My car came with the not installed, and I think there was something in the install literature that said not to use them.

Can they safely be used? If not, has anyone modified the mount so that they can?

I've had them on my car for years...The only thing I've heard about them from others is that you must not push on them too hard or over time you will snap off the handle on the lock mech. If you exercise some caution they fine to use...
BTW - you have a reply to your email about the wiring diagram for your car...
You have one of Eric's engines in your car I see...I would guess you purchased the car from Dynamic then...I too have an engine from P.E and it's been great...no problems....

Mine have been on for a few years and have held up to kids. I use them every time I am in the car!

FWIW my SPF manual states these are "for appearance only" and not to be used for opening or closing the door :JEKYLHYDE:JEKYLHYDE

When I purchased my car, I took them off. I cut them to a shorter length and used them to shut the doors. I made it so they have a nice loop away form the inside of the door, up towards the front more. My car is black, so i hate it when people would put their hand on the outside on the door to shut it.

I believe they come slipped just over the "ball" of the latch lever. A such, they present a problem where they could twist the lever. I slipped my pair further down towards the base of the lever and have had no problem using it to close the door.

I bought my "pull straps" a year ago from Hillbank. They look neat but I have yet to find the "ball" as you put it to screw into the top of my latch lever(s). They did not come included when I bought my car. Without them the straps always slip off. I have been unable to find a retailer/site that will sell jst the "balls" alone. Please help if anyone knows where I can find them??? :confused:

Mine have been on the car since birth "Oct 1996", have never had any problems and they are used all the time.

I second Fred's observation. #770's "pull straps" came installed when the car was delivered from Olthoff's in October, 2000. No problems whatsoever.

BUT....I was instructed to NOT use them to close the door, as the constant pulling on them would bend the door latch handles. "They are only to be used to release the door latches by pulling them STRAIGHT FORWARD...and NEVER to be used to close the door. " Directly from Bob Olthoff's mouth...(I miss ya, Bob!)

To exit #770...I raise up my left arm, and reach under with my right hand to pull the leather strap forward to release the door latch. Works flawlessly everytime...no failures...no bent door release handles.

I think it's been said, but don't pull on them to close the doors. But they work fine to unlatch the doors, just pull down on em.

Freddie hit the nail on the head. To unlatch the door, pull forward on the strap, not up or down, forward only. I've had my straps on the car since new in April of 2004 with no issues.
And, don't use them to close the door!

Boy I shouda read my owners manual.:o I pulled the cord and broke the damn lever right off.:CRY: Not that i mattered much after that b!tch in the newyorker smashed into my car in that parking lot.

Actually, I believe they were usually supplied with the cars in the past. Check your door pockets. Be careful too - Using them tends to exert a lot more stress on the lock mechanism knob, rather than you using your hand on the door knob.

The pull cord straps were not on early serial cars . I don't know what serial they started including them .

The straps come with all cars now, but are not installed so you have the choice of with or without.
