Tremec 3550 Problem
Hey Gang - Can anyone help me on this? Had my Windsor stroker completely rebuilt two weeks ago and now I have a transmission problem. It grinds intermittently with the clutch depressed and in any gear except reverse. It goes away with a shift to neutral or if I let the clutch out. The 3550 manual says that a too high idle speed can cause grinding. (My re-builder had set the idle to 1200 rpm for break-in) I reduced the idle to 800 rpm and the problem persists. I've spent time on the phone with Jeff at Tremec in Plymouth MI and he says the problem is very unusual and he will have to research it. My crank was NOT replaced but was re-surfaced. My re-builder discovered the original flywheel was assembled backwards (thats why I needed a new starter!!) and we have a new one in place. I have new cam with a different firing order. Any ideas??

Yeah. Are you absolutely certain that the clutch is fully disengaging? I'm assuming it is a hydraulic unit (master & slave). Having somebody in the car, pushing the clutch pedal while you check for movement amounts underneath should give you some idea whether or not this is the source.
On the other hand, if it ISN'T hydraulic, do exactly the same - check total movement of the fork. Since the whole flywheel assembly is now new, there may be some need to adjust pivots for the fork, or any other mechanical connections in the system. |
3 items;
1. Clutch engagement (or disengagement ) and pilot bushing interference 2. Trans oil consistency. Too thick >? 3.-- I would drop the trans fluid and pass it through a white paper coffee filter to examine for shavings. after that , i would look at shifter interference. (ok so 4 things... --Steve |

Well, my mechanic has inspected and determined it is one of three things, clutch failure, pivot bearing or faulty (but new) t/o bearing. Hooray - Not a transmission problem. The mechanic will need to pull the tranny but he's wondering if there is enough room. I think I will start a new thread asking help on how best to remove the transmission without taking the engine out. Thanks to those who have provided input.

the trans tunnel comes out of the TOP of the car.
