Gas on the floor
 
I never saw this problem before, I wonder if anyone can help.
Yesterday I filled my spf up to the top of the filler neck with gas, today there was gas on the floor and it had run down from the top of the tank, not from the filler neck . It was not alot of gas, and now it stopped, but the filler neck is empty. Any ideas? Thanks guys

I think there's an overflow tube (vent) on the neck - so the excess gas flows out of that tube. It's happened to me at the gas station. The first time I freaked out. Now - I just don't fill up the neck.

maybe thats it. I have filled it to the top before and not noticed it. The thing is it ran over from on top of the tank, not down the filler neck. Is there a breather on top of the tank?

There's a small hole about 1" down from the top of the neck towards the front that is connected to a hose that runs down the outside of the neck and drains excess gas down to the ground.

that wasn't the source. on my car the hole and tube is right at the top and I've spilled into that before. This was a delayed thing,seems like it ran out slowly. Maybe it is a vent.

Well - I'd be thinking leak then. Sounds like a little time on the floor with a flash light is in order.

Remove trunk floor panel , under the truck carpet. Take a look at the sending unit gasket.

Could be expansion. If you live where it's cold and then park in a warm garage it could have expanded enough to reach the overflow.

I agree, the tank burped, do not overfill the tank, gas prices are dropping, LOL!! I have not seen this on my car but on many others. You probably filled up cold (filling station tank is underground) and went into a warm garage or you sloshed the tank.

FOMOCONUT is right. its a leaky sending unit gasket. been there, done that.

The carpet is just velcro'd over the fuel tank sender access door in the trunk. Unscrew the plate, check out the gasket area, most likely it is what leaked when you had it all the way full as the others have noted here.

It was the sending unit gasket.FOMOCONUT called it first, thanks to him and eveybody else. All good info. You guys are great.

Blame it on the design. When filling it to the top, the gas is close to the overflow. As the gas heats up and expands, some goes out the overflow when its parked.

The easy fix is to stop filling b/4 its 100% full and or fill the tank before your ride, not at the end of the ride. No more gas on garage floor for me.

I will check my sending unit gasket, just to make sure, but the puddle occured under the rear passenger tire by the filler pipe.

Not Crazy about the stock SPF tank. -- is there another that is an easy changeover >?

IE setup for the sender and such, or new sender....
