Steering Rack Tighten
What is required to tighten the steering rack? Everything seemed to be an odd size. I take it the big nut is the locknut, and little stem is the tightening mechanism?
Has anyone done this? I'm trying to calm a severe reaction to bumps/pavement irregularities...not by ME, by the SPF. Thanks. |
the only adjustment is lash i believe, and i would not recommend touching it. if there is excess play in the rack, replace it. if the car is doing strange things over bumps, check the joints, and control arm bushings. there will be some erratic action over bumps, because of the weight of the car,or lack of it.

You can tighten up the play in the rack by loosing the lock nut and turning in the adjusting bolt in the center. That is what it is for. What I would question is why you have play. If the rack guide or bearing are bad then the adjustment is just temporary.
One other thing I would check is the tightness of the I shaft conections. There is history of the bolts being tight but the joint having play in them. You can tighten the cross bolts to tighten them. I changed my bolts to good flange head class 8 bolts and increased the torque and it tightend them up and got rid of the play in my steering. Just watch the shafts and turn the wheel and it should show up if they are not tight. Hopt this helps. |
Have you checked the joints an the steering shaft. Drivers side, inside the engine compartment. 2 clevis joints. The older cars had a design that developed some play after time. You can also check to see if they are properly connected to the steering shaft stubs. I've seen loose connection here before.
