My alarm system
The alarm on the car has been acting up lately and I am thinking of getting rid of the whole thing. I have changed the batteries on the remote and the car still wont crank over. I am not good with electrical issues and I am wondering if there is an easy way to bypass the alarm so I can be sure that it actually IS the alarm acting up and not something else not allowing the car to start/crank over.
Just for info, I cleaned the underside of the car with Green cleaner and a hose just before the issue cropped up. The electrical system seems to work; lights, horn, fuel pump. The battery is fully charged and on a trickle charger. When I turn the key nothing happens...not even a weak click. Which is very similar to what happens when the alarm is active. Any thoughts? |
Dane,
I am just guessing but was this a factory installed alarm system? If it was or wasn't you might be able to disable it by pulling the fuse, there should be one. Possible you have an alarm control lead that has weak or broken insulation and when you cleaned under the car it could be shorting to one of the other wires which disables the starting system when the alarm is on. If you can describe what modifications were done to install the alarm, we could probably reverse engineer it out of the system. Washing the bottom of the car should not disable it. Can you jump start the car? Have you load tested the battery? Have you checked your main gound connections? One on the battery, and both on the chassis? (rear by battery and up by starter) Any issues with the ignition switch? Is it the original?
Email me...we'll get ya up and running.... Blas |
The battery is fully charged. I have had the battery charge down pretty far and the fuel pump is a great giveaway on the state of the battery. The pump sounds great, and the battery is maintaining around 12.9. If the starter had juice, the thing would at least click.
The ignition switch is not original, I swapped it with a new one about two years ago. Never had a problem with it. Can I just rip the alarm out, or is there some sort of procedure that needs to be followed? It was installed when I bought the car so I know nothing about it. I was going to start at where the noise(beeping, squwalking) comes from and follow the wires from there start removing everything. I am only concerned that if I mess with the wires around the ignition switch that I will through murphys law rip out something that is needed and then I will need to hire a pro. Thanks for the help guys. |
Will it crank with jumper cables?
Another owner I just finished working with found corroded connections on the fuse panel under the dash...he had a similar problem to yours...strong battery but no cranking... Sure the alarm system could be removed, you just need to re-attach all the wires where they belong... |
Going connection to connection, I found that the connector for the "in gear" shutoff switch under the car was loose....problem solved.
But, I have my alarm system in complete disarray, and I think it is time to remove the whole thing. It must have been installed by the factory because that alarm wires are so tied into the harness that it seems impossible to follow the wires to their origination point. If anyone is interested in any of the alarm components PM me. I will also be completely removing the stereo this Summer. So again, if there is interest let me know. |
