Painting iron block

Is it neccesary to paint an iron block, if so can you use clear to keep the raw look or is paint the way to go, any advice would help. If paint what color looks best.

blykins 06-29-2011 12:48 PM

It will start flashing rust and will look nasty if you don't paint it.

I primer all of my blocks, then paint the color that is requested by the customer. I think either black or ford blue looks best for Ford blocks.

Every once in a while someone has a bad starter ground because they painted everything around there. I've never had it happen, but it bears mentioning....

Could a clear coat be used or a clear paint, if there is anything like that.

blykins 06-29-2011 03:11 PM

There is clear coat, but I'd have to check and see if it's available in high temp.

I wouldn't worry too much about what the block looked like. When they're sitting in the car, you see nothing but valve covers, intakes, and water pumps anyway.

Brent's right. It's pretty hard to see the sides of the block. If they're painted any shade of black, even a half-ass paint job, you really can't see them at all. And you can't tell if the block has been cleaned up, deburred, etc. -- you can barely see it. This is the eye angle on most of our cars with an FE in them (small blocks are a different story).

If you really cant see it I guess it does not matter, lol. Thanks for the help.

So someone bought a Jim Osborne decal kit for a Ford of some sort and decided to use them on a "Cobra"

The FoMoCo antifreeze tag was never used at Shelby. And the "Autolite" voltage regulator decal is installed on a footbox? he "Caution Fan" decal was not used on Cobras and the oil filler cap decal was not used on the chrome oil caps.

Any other critiques wanted?

I keep track of when I changed my antifreeze with that tag, and one of my kids enjoyed putting that Autolite on -- the car will be his one day as well. Are you having a bad day or something?%/

I like the decals as I prefer to have my motor look period correct rather than to try to duplicate an original cobra. I guess it's that question of kit car for personal fun, or kit car for imitation authenticity. ( does that even make sense?) lol:confused:

Makes perfect sense. I think Mark IV is just cranky that he's stuck trying to to sell SPF cars in today's depressed economy, so he's taking it out on ERA cars.
