Technical: Pressing steel barbed fittings into 3/16" nylon tubing.
Gentlemen, I have an PA6 Nylon tubing 3/16's oil pressure line from Nisonger with the ends and female nuts made for the Smiths oil pressure gauge. It is a female flanged gasketed nut with a steel barbed fitting pressed into the PA6 nylon tubing. Needless to say the nylon tubing is very stiff and it does not expand easily. New technology. I called Peter at Nisonger to learn the procedure so I can cut the line, custom fit the length, and without enlarging the hole in my dash, press the fitting in myself. He said they come premade from Smiths.
I did searches but no accepted procedure outside of professional assembly. I understand many new high pressure fuel injections are using this nylon tubing over barbed fitting technology. Anybody have experience in this ie heat/tools etc. ?? |

Why didn't you use the steel braided lines and AN fittings that they have for oil pressure gauges? |

The nylon injector lines for Lucas High Pressure fuel injection present a similar problem. The method that works best is to take 2 blocks of wood, clamp them together and drill a hole through the parting line small enough to trap the line. Mount the blocks in a vise with sufficient length of line protruding to accommodate the barb. Offer up the barb to the line and with one quick blow of a hammer, the job will be done. Be sure to protect the other end of the fitting.

I have boiled a couple of cups of water in the microwave while getting tools needed ready. Place hose end in hot water for a min or 2 to soften a bit. Place a small amount of silicone grease on barb fitting. Push the tapered end of needle nose pliers in the heated hose end in attempt to expand hose, work it as possible. Repeat as needed but in the end ya gotta just go for it and push fitting in hose end.
PS I found clamp in my inverted flare tool kit will help hold the hose in a vise just like Barry was making out of wood. GOOD LUCK. |
