289 HiPo Engine Oil

Greetings all,

Any thoughts on engine oil for a 289 HiPo (K-code)?

Brand? Grade? Synthetic?

Will be driven mostly on moderate to warm days, although there may be some cooler morning startups. My main concern is for the lifters/cam... never had a solid lifter car before.

Thanks!

I would suggest high zinc content oil, I am not a fan of synthetic.

Royal Purple is easily purchased.....

I use nothing but Brad Penn....let me know if you can't find it.

It's a small block Ford, and won't be driven hard. It doesn't need anything special.

Use a viscosity that will maintain oil pressure when hot and cold. If the engine's tight, use 5W-30. If things are a bit loose, use 10W-40. Don't use a single weight oil, or 20W-50.

There's no need to spend the big bux on a true synthetic oil. A true waste of money.

Buy whatever brand you've been using over the years, and change it once or twice a year, depending on hours/miles of use.

Solid vs. hydraulic lifter won't matter; but flat tappet vs. roller will. If you have flat tappets, add 1-2 bottles of Comp Cams break in lube. I have roller lifters, but I use that stuff anyway. It helps prevent glassification of the cylinder walls.

Thanks for the input - will look into the Royal Purple and Brad Penn...

Glad it wasn't Brad Pitt; Karen would be driving the car all the time :)

Your local Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, Napa, etc, etc, doesn't have these items in stock for immediate services. I'm sure my engine builder has it in stock too but he's 72 miles away. Got mine from ebay, same price as above, and two days later... I'd much rather spend more time at the engine builders but that also means I spending more bucks too :).

Unless a post was deleted, I don't see any post that would suggest that Brad Penn can be bought at any of those places. I do see my post stating that my builder has it in stock all the time, and I'm sure he's not the only one that carrys it. Personally, I could give a damn where you buy your oil, all I did was state a fact......

Silversmith 04-07-2012 03:26 PM

Sae?

I use what Lee Holmon suggested, SAE 40W. I just happen to like Brad Penn, the green stuff. It's easy to read on the stick  I'm sure Brad Penn- SAE 20/50(it's part synthetic now) would work fine for your sbf. By the way FIA-ERA; hows the BBF project comming ? :) OH! don't forget "Joe Gibbs racing oil" it's top notch too! :)

Serioulsy! WTH! I was clearly stating that the gentleman that made the post COULD NOT buy it "locally" from a large chain auto parts but from a dealer, thus the wait time. Now, given the fact that there is probably 25 miles between you and Mr. Stryffeler I can see how there could be "no wait" time. But you DID NOT let everyone else know this. Where do you get off with that last statement?! You need to CLEARLY READ the posts as there was NO negatively statements made in ANY way on my behalf that would warrant your last statement "Personally, I could give a damn where you buy your oil, all I did was state a fact......"

It is responses like that, that make me not to even respond to another ones posts because of the inconsiderate "Dinks" that don't take even the second to comprehend the statements said before spatting off their own uncontrolled and unexcused response! Just unbelievable!

Silversmith, I'm doing just fine and I believe you ended up with the perfect car for yourself! :) I see your posts and can tell your enthusiasm for it and it makes me feel better. I haven't done anything as of yet because I don't have a car that is mine to put my 427 TP into :(. Plus, the wife has a firm grip on the money from my FIA and won't let it go :(!! Back to the drawing board on that one!! Thanks for the response, the great talks, and the genuine passion to our madness! All the best! Matt

Ain't it the truth!

That plane ticket still bites a bit, but I'm  ok now! Isn't thats just like a wife when it comes to cash! When I went to pick up my AC, I took cash & a pre made bill of sale. As I gave Mike the cash, asking if he wanted to count it. He smiled & said no need! %/ Mike went strait to his tool box & dumped the cash in & closed the top! About 20 to 30 seconds later, his wife poped her head out of the house & asks if Mike needs a bill of sale made up. Me thinks he had learned about sharing toy cash from past experiences. If the wife gets into your toy cash to heavy Matt; & it just becomes to much to take! I have a bumper sticker I can send you. It reads WIFE FOR SALE TAKE OVER PAYMENTS!:JEKYLHYDE Remember! Dirty Harry said "A mans got to know his limitations" ;) Keep @ it M8! you'll get back in da saddle again:D But if you decide not to do anything with that FE, keep me in mind!**):3DSMILE: By the way, rummor has Dave Smith @ FFR planning a FIA spec/racer. Via one of his threads!
