removing gasket adhesive or caulking

i purchased a camper that i had to remove a lot of caulking on and repair, and on a whim decided to try a heat gun, removed the stuff like butter using a steel putty knife heated by the gun and heating the caulking as i went along.

on an oil pan, with the 'right stuff' gasket maker which is like rubber glue stuck all along the rails as i hadn't used a conventional gasket, i tried it again. works great, in about 5 minutes i had completely removed most of the material, then used a wire brush on a bench grinder to clean the rest, total time probably less than 15 minutes.
