Triangulated 4 link adjustment
Any suggestions on the correct way to set this up? My lower arms are pointing down ( diff to frame) 10 degrees. The car squates under acceleration and doesn't spin the tires....feels like it's hooking up but had read that the lower arms should be level to the ground?

far from being an expert, but i've been playing around with mine. Sounds like the front of your bars are lower than the backs. If you level them out, you will likely find it will squat less. These things are really sensitive to change. Mine were originally opposite to yours (higher in the front) and it would hook up like crazy, zero squat, but the handling was scary, darting left and right, especially gas on/gas off.
Basically, when the bars are higher in the front, when one side drops (due to torque or cornering), the lower bars on the side that is dropping effectively lengthen, (and the other effectively shortens) causing rear over-steer. I would assume with your bars higher in the front, you have the opposite: rear under steer under cornering/gas on/gas off situations. Look forward to others commenting! Does anyone have sway bars set up with their 4 link? Can you comment on how that changed handling? |
A stabilizer or sway bar will more or less link the action of the two sides of the rear axle as much as the bushings and the strength of the bar itself and attachment points etc. allow for a given load. This also for cornering (or isolated bumps on either side) will about double the spring rate as both sides will have to compress. In other words, you can still get independent action but it takes a lot more load on one side or another to do it. A rear bar also tends to loosen up the rear for a more bias for less under and more oversteer. For drag racing a longer ladder setup would I think be preferable but others who have done it would be best source of info. For cornering, I like the panhard bar (trackbar) setup but am not really familiar yet with the setup on most of the Cobra relicas. I know on a mustang road race car my team had the 4 link setup would get a heavy side load and then "bind" at the bushings and the suspension became nearly locked. Hit a bump in mid corner and your rear end becomes your front end...don't ask me how I know that :)
