Need help w/ rear brake caliper from Lincoln Versailles

If anyone has any experience with Lincoln Versailles or Ford Granada rear brake calipers, some information would be most appreciated.

When I got my car, the parking brakes were totally non-functional. Did a bunch of repairs/rebuilds/modifications to make them work just fine. Over the course of time they were less and less effective, which I attributed to possibly some cable stretch. No problem as I needed to put the car up on stands and replace the nearly destroyed oil pan anyway. Just adjust the cable, right? No problem with the right side, but I could not get the left adjusted. Removed the cable, and the actuating arm is now 90 degrees rotated from where it was. No problem right? Just take the caliper apart and see what's wrong inside.

Here's the rub..... I have no idea if the retaining nut is left or right hand thread. Bought the factory Ford service manual and it says nothing about it. Design would dictate that the left caliper SHOULD be left hand thread so the nut is tightened when the brake is applied, but nowhere can I find any info on it. These nuts are torqued to 75-90 so it's pretty tight and I don't want to just reef on it without knowing the right rotation. And no, I can't see the end of the thread.

Help anyone?

Since the replacement units are the not the same part number for either Left or Right (minus the mirrored levers) but the internals Nuts/Pistons/Bearing are the same. I think its safe to say they are all RH threaded.

On a side note the 10MM lever retaining bolt is probably only 10-15ft lb and the 32 MM housing nut is the 75-90 ft lb.

The factory service manual warns that internal parts differ from side to side and are stamped l and r although they have the same part number. No mention is made of the retaining pieces

The only noticeable difference I saw was the bleeder ports are 180 out.
The sprag adjuster (hold the 3 bearings) are mirrored it appears.

I did just look at a Versailles and Granada Youtube videos on rebuilding them and neither mentioned caution when dealing with L VS R side.

Reman Calipers are avail thru Summit, Autozone etc.. for approx $65 per. They do carry a hefty core for $90 in some places.
It may be good to experiment on theirs.

Right hand threads!!!!

Watched very carefully the videos on rebuilding these calipers again, and I can finally see the "L" stamped in the adjuster and the guy is screwing in the retainer right handed. Now I finally feel confident to really lean on the breaker bar. Right hand threads here run counter to accepted practice, but I guess Ford didn't want a couple of extra parts in their system.

Can you post this video please, even a link?

What do mean by "right hand threads here run counter to accepted practice"?

Thanks for the links, but I already know the theory behind this.
Just curious as to indianamoons's quote of right hand threads.

The parts necessary to make the LH caliper function as a mirror of the RH caliper are marked as LH. It is how the ramps are cut for the balls, one side is clockwise, the other counterclockwise. The LH markings are for the assembler. Imagine what would happen without the markings. No handbrake after reassembly.

Lh vs Rh

As the left side handbrake is applied and the inner grooved plate (the one screwed into the piston) moves toward the left side of the car, the outer is pushed toward the center of the car, and bears against the thrust bearing. Normal design practice would dictate that this movement and rotation should force the nut to tighten (left hand threads) instead of loosen (right hand threads). It is obvious to me that this has not been an issue with this design, but I just didn't want to try to remove the nut without being sure of the rotation.

Hope that explains.

Pat

I haven't dismissed your posting, and I did thank you for attaching some links.

I was hoping to see what the OP is talking about.
