Loose Shifter Bolts MKIV AK2003
2 Attachment(s)
The shifter on my car was loose and it was the two bolts that secured the handle to the base on the transmission. The way AC built the car the boot was riveted to the trans tunnel from the bottom. The only way to access the bolts is to pull the seats, remove the seat belt mechanisms, the seat belt anchors and the ten sheetmetal screws that secure the tunnel to the floor. Put the shifter in 1st, 3rd or reverse and the tunnel will come forward and off. Tighten the two screws on the handle and reverse the procedure. You need an 11MM socket for the seats which is a nut that you don't see very often.

Nice work Eric!
I went the MKIII shifter route with mine, terrific job! |
Very nice. But, they will loosen again.:( Blue Loctite is good, safety wire is way better. And drilled head, cadmium plated AN6 aircraft bolts from AIRFASCO show you really care. Here's a pic of my shift lever that bolts to the top of my Tremec.

It does pay - when you're building your own car - to think "what if I need to access this later", and be considerate to yourself (and/or to the car's next owner as well). The less potential for cursing, the better. That said, you can't always predict what might need attention sometime later, and make allowances for it. Cheers! Glen |
11mm = 7/16"
