Attaching door panels and kick panels
My kick panels and door panels have plastic studs that protrude from them requiring that you drill a slightly smaller hole than the stud to attach to the body.
Has anyone cut these off and just used "Liquid Nails" or something like it to make it easier? |
What's wrong with using the plastic studs?

Nothing's wrong. Just a pain to figure out exactly where and how to mark the holes. If I cut them off and simply applied a glue...then it's done.

what kick panels? where are those on the car?
I only have door panels and thats about it....I am planning on using upholstery screws with the built in recess washer. I don't know about gluing these babies on, what happens when its time to recover the panels? Tim |

That's the best Idea that I've heard yet. I'm with you, that's exactly what I'll do. I have (maybe my terminology is wrong?) "kick panels" that cover the outside of the footwells from just in front of the door hinges to include the hinge, under the door itself and up the side of the cockpit along the seat area. I may have to take a pic of them. |
I understand what they are now....yes it would be easy to attch them to the rails or framing with these screws
They come in chrome finish, SS or all black. Buy them in bulk or in packages of 6 to 8....usually like a #8 or #10 by 3/4" Are you going to do these lower panels in the same material as the doorpanels or are you going to be carpeting them? My only concern about using these screws on fibreglass is that there could be places where theres not enough thickness for a good bite. In that case I was contemplating a plastic drywall/sheetrock anchor. Tim |
Where did you get them? Does The Home Depot carry them?
My panels are made from the same material as my dash and door panels...red with white pipeing psuedo leather. ha ha. |
Yes any hardware store stocks them. Thats even what they are called....(upholstery screw) I got mine at a Canadian Tire store.

TAKE A LARGE PIECE OF PAPER AND LAY IT ON THE BACK OF THE PANEL . PUSH THE PLASTIC SUDS THROUGHT THE PAPER AND MARK THE OUTER EDGE OF THE PANEL. NOW YOU HAVE A TEMPLETE TO MARK THE DOOR WITH. TAPE IT IN PLACE AND DRILL THUR THE PAPER WHERE THE HOLES ARE.

on thin fiberglass place a screw clip over the edge and the screw will have plenty to bite on to

Lots of good ideas. I like the paper idea too as I don't need to spend any more money. ha ha

Door Panel Attachment
I just went down to Wal-Mart and bought a roll of two inch wide, self-adhesive Velcro. By putting one piece around the edge of the door and the other around the door panel, they stick real well and can be readily removed.
