MSD and Smiths Tach

I know there have been threads on this issue, What I need to know is, are the Smiths tach's on the Superformance cars out there working correctly? My spf 901 has a newer tach w/ several wires coming out the back of the gauge w/ MSD digital 6 plus ignition control box. What do I need to insure accurate operation, if anything? Thanx %/

Rodney,

I would only worry about it if the tach works intermittently or stops working altogether.

If this does occur (and it may), you'll need to get the tach internals modified to work with the box. Nisonger Auto (Peter Bayer from Contemporary) offers a fix for this problem.

I forgot which color wire it is but you have the diagram. Some smith's tachs need the MSD capacitor inline with the tach wire, and some need the capacitor and the MSD tach adapter box to work. I forget which need which, as SPF changed the style of tach to one with a multi-wire connector some time ago. Try it with no adapter or extra capacitor first, if I remember correctly, the new tach's don't need them. If it don't work add the cap. it's free if you call the MSD tech support line, then the adapter if necessary as it costs a few dollars. Sorry for the poor memory.

sounds good!

Ok Ill try this out and see if it works. The wire colours for the tach are: grey,brown,black,black/green and red/orange. as per the new owners manual. thanx :D
