I have been looking at some of OZ Wheels. I like the "Crono Evolution" and "F1 Cup" models. I am not sure if they have the right sizes, but that is the direction that I am hoping to go in the spring. I agree that you will find that the true performance tire market has gone to 17", and that may be changing rapidly. It wasn't too long ago that an 18" wheel was an oddity, and anything bigger a freak. Now 18's are becoming common (most large tire dealerships stock a surprising number of sizes), and 20's are becoming a wheel of choice (ala Ford SVT lightning, Harley edition). A lot of the hoodlum wannabes are demanding 24's!! i recommend that you buy a set of 15's for drag racing (torq thrust D a personal fav) and 17's for road use. The 17's will give superior performance, but they do look a bit odd on the car (I use 17" PS Engineering knock offs). |
18" Wheels
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I've just received 18" wheels for my West Coast replica. 265/35R18 front and 345/35R18 rear. Those rears are beauties! Should be for the price. Don't have it on the road yet, but expecting great traction and handling with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

which wheels are you using? Wont the tread wear quicker? I'm still stuck on what to do...having 17 will make my car handle like a go-kart but the 15 should be a better ride. And look more original.

ive got weld 15" wheels front and back and the 13" wilwoods fot perfectly. changed from 11" and haven't looked back. check it out!!!!!!!!!!!1

I love the 16's I got, but then again, I'm running Yokohama DOT race tires and don't care about tire mileage. They wear out in about 10,000 miles. BUT, man do they GRIP! I'm so spoiled by the superior traction of a DOT race tire I don't think I can EVER go back to Comp T/A's again. Anyway, 15" tires set the car up to high and give to much flex in the sidewall for good "racing" applications, and race is what I do. 255X50X16 on 10" wheels in back, 245X50X16 on 9.5" wheels up front. Compomotive.

If you don't care about mileage and you want superior traction try a set of Goodyear bias ply G19 racing slicks in 15" sizes. I get about 400 miles to a set but they do work better than the street performance tires.;) Cranky |

Do the Yokohama's have tread or are they slicks with a few grooves cut in them? And do they come in 17's?

I couldn't run slicks on the highway! There not DOT approved. The Yoko's are "slicks" with angled grooves in them. I drive the car to the track (and an occasional cruise). The "tread" is deeper than most of the DOT approved race tires. Mine, 6/32. Most are around 4/32 (or even "shaved"). A DOT approved "race" tire can be driven legally on the street. Yeah I'm thinking about a second set of rims and going totally to slicks for racing. The Yoko's DO start to slide more if the track gets real hot. The slicks just keep getting better with higher heat (AND stick better)!
As I put so few miles on the car anyway the tire mileage is not just a big issue. My other DOT 16" race tire choice was Hoosier, less tread depth, hmmmm,,,,it was a tough call. Ernie And yes 17" is availble. I used TIRERACK.com. Not that good a site to find what you want, but they DO have them! You got to DIG to find them! GET THEM HEAT CYCLED BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!! |

Racer X #99.....it just dawned on me you said those slicks are good for 400 miles? Dam, that will ruin my tire budget in a hurry! There is no cheap way to race, ha ha.
