T56 with a 427 info needed

Do any of you guys know if a T56 5 or 6 speed will mate up to a 66 427 SO motor ? I'm putting it in my 68 mustang and before I opt to put my small input shaft toploader in , I want to explore all the options. My Cobra has a Tremac with a 390 but I didnt assemble it so I dont know whats needed. Thanks for any insight . Olaf

I talked to Red at mcleod industries about four weeks ago. He told me they were in the process of making some and they should be ready by now price would be about $2200.

Hi Olaf,

The T56 has a modular bell housing which means that the front of the gearbox combines part of the bell housing. This makes it difficult to adapt to other motors than the ones the box was designed for. There is a way arround it though. Salee Chevrolet sells a T56 with an adaptor plate bolted to the front of it that accepts a conventional bell housing. It would then just be a matter of finding a 427 bell housing with the right depth.

The clutch plate is no problem either as the T56 has a standard 26 spline input shaft.

Here is the link to the info @ Salee Chevrolet:

I've been working on a T56 box for my Cobra for a while now and I'm impressed with the construction.

Cheers

Olaf,
A big torque FE does not need a 5 or 6 speed trans unless you just like to shift a lot.

OLAF HERRICK A richmond 5 or 6 spd will bolt up to your motor with a lakewood bellhousing. The 6-spd is nice for highway cruising. What gearing do you have?? T56 as a hp and tork rating of 475 in both. As long as you are not using slicks and 5000 rpm holeshots this trans will last a long time. Are you going to autocross or roadrace, you may want the 5 spd with a 3.08 rear. It is what most of the top racers are using. A wide ratio 5 spd with a 500 hp motor will give you the best of both worlds. The 5spd has straight cut gears depending on the trans you buy. This makes it stronger, but adds a little wine to it. T56 comes in the Viper with a V10. Go to the Viper web for any trns problems. I am a GM tech. We have 3 kids racing their Firebirds and breaking 2 gear clusters from power shifting. They are not using slicks on their cars. I brought a G-FORCE 5spd the ratings are 1200hp. I am hard on the drive train and wanted the strongest parts I could get. Hope this helps. Rick Lake
