Rim Backspace question
ok, If the rearend has clearance for 5.5 backspace what does that measurement represent. Also if it is 5.5 is it safe to go to a 5 or 4.5?

Yup, you can use less backspacing, but the downside is that your tires will be sticking out past the body.

The backside of your tires will rub on the frame and fiberglass above the frame.

Dawg, are their any factory rearends that would allow a larger rim size that is stock? I see people using a lincoln rear?

something that is bigger than 8 inch rim. Bryan mentioned to me 8.8 ford the largest rim that could be used is an 8 inch with 5.5 backspace. hard to find rims that size.

The only factory rears that we used were the Lincoln Mark VII (8.8") and the Lincoln Versailles (9"). The 9" is a little narrower than the 8.8. Now we only use a narrowed 9" shortened by Moser with new Moser axles shafts. You could use a 10" wide rim, but there's just not much room between the frame and the outside of the fenderwell, so your tire may be sticking out past the body just a little. It's not too late to order one of those narrowed axles from Karen. Oh well, since I'm trying to spend your money, have Karen toss in the tubular front with the Carrera shocks also.

Ron are you bryan's partner their? Just putting 2 and 2 together, and buy the way I told bryan yesterday to go ahead with the full tubular front end. I think I might be calling again in a couple days to just add the rearend as well. The price is great for all new stuff and no headaches.

With the shortened rearend what size rims could I run then? 10's no problem?

Nope! Barry is Bryans partner. But I've been there 5 1/2 years. Doesn't feel like a day over 20! Te he he he. Next time you call, ask Bryan what size and backspacing he has on his silver car. Those are just right. I can't remember what they are.
