SPF Speedo Fix

For Superformance folks (and others?)

Many of us have speedos that bounce around, particularly at low speeds. I've finally gotten it fixed by Eric Hindenberger at Performance Engineering (Ross, OH). It's now--normal.

He changes out the cable and some such (I'm not exactly mechanically inclined--more declined). Anyway, he can send the upgrade or fix it in-shop.

So here's the plug: PECobra.com (e:mail) or 513-738-5001

Speedo bounce is much less if you lube the speedo cable with the packet of grease that Pioneer includes in the box when you buy a new speedo cable. That and avoid sharp bends when routing it. There are also speedo gears that come in both right hand and left hand twists, many peiople have the wrong ones for tremecs.

HELLO, FIRST POST ON MK3 WITH 342 R ROUSCH. I AM SECOND OWNER PURCHASED WITH 3 THOUSAND MILES. SNAKE HAS ALWAYS HAD A BOUCING SPEEDO NEEDLE AND LEAKING CABLE AT TRANNY. I USED THIS SITE TO GUIDE ME ALONG WITH FIXING PROBLEM. 1 I FOUND THAT BY BACKING OFF CABLE TO SPEEDO IMPROVED BOUCING. 2 I REMOVED CABLE FROM REAR OF SPEEDO AND TRANNY. 3 DETERMINED THAT CABLE HAD SEVERAL KINKS AND WAS TO LONG FOR APPLICATION 4 STOCK ORG. CABLE MEASURED APPROXLY 62 " and ford napa replacment# 615 1644 WAS 57". I INSTALLED NEW CABLE USING OLD GEAR AND NEW OIL RING. 4 TIME FOR TEST DRIVE....SURPRIZE NO MORE NEEDLE BOUNCE OR LEAK. TKS TO ALL POSTERS

Eric fixed mine. Had an issue with the reverser and installed a new one.

Glad to hear you got that fixed Dan! The 615-1644 Napa speedo cable is perfect for the SPF and pretty much eliminates the bouncing.

I have a question. When replacing the SPF speedo cable with the napa replacment# 615 1644, is it necessary to lube the napa cable? If so, what to use and exactly how do you do it? TIA!

Mine came sealed with cable installed (pre greased). The only problem that I ran into, was that the crimp on the transmission end of cable dripped a bit. I ending up cleaning it thoroughly and sealing it with some red permatex, which fixed the drip.

I tried absolutely everything to fix my wobbling speedo years ago in my SPF and got nowhere. Sent it back to Nisonger and they said the cost to repair my speedometer was almost as much as a new mechanical one. Just gave up chasing the fix. Wound up buying a new electronic Smiths speedo from them and have been happy ever since. Plus it is programmable for any tire diameter and any gear ratio. Dead on accurate.
