Valve Cover Breather
I'm a new owner of a ERA 289 FIA and love it. But, it's blowing oil out the valve cover breathers (slowly). Do I need to attach the breather to the intake system? It's a 302 about 325-340 hp. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have breathers on each cover? Try putting a piece of fuel cell foam in each one. It works! I have found that a piece about 2"-2 1/2" diameter X 2" long will stay secure in the vent tube without any help. |
Or you could mount a remote breather and puke tank... solves the problem and looks great.

Are there baffles inside the valve covers? The baffles prevent oil being splashed onto the fittings by the rocker arms. One valve cover should be attached to the vacuum fitting (usually 3/8 " dia) at the base of the carb. The other valve cover should have a breather.

Rick, does that get saturated and start to drip?
I tried something simular and after an hour of high RPM driving, I found my breather was dripping. If this works, I will thank you now. Warren, you may have to add baffles. I made mine out of Stanless and chromed acorn nuts through the covers. :D :D |

I have baffles in both valve covers (Ford Motorsports). No drips on my Cobra. I'm sorry to hear that your breather is dripping! Maybe some Viagra will help. :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: |

I heard some of those low RPM engines do not have this problem. Good to hear you are not. Possibly if the application of the "rib" made a lick of sense, I could find humor in it. However, should you find yourself with this problem...there is no cure for syphilis. :D :D :D |

I have breathers in both covers and no baffles. Where can I find the fuel cell foam? Any ideas.

Trularin: No it does not get saturated to the point that it drips. What actually happens is that the oil vapors that are usually pumped up and into the breather are fliltered and "air" without the oil is what gets up to the breather. In my setup I have no slash shields and have used the fuel cell foam in 2 different sets of covers with equal success. One set had the set up like GT 350R with one breather per cover, my current setup uses 2 breather tubes in each cover (FIA type) ( Gallery pictures of each available).
Robspiceman: Fuel cell foam is available from most Circle track vendors or Fuel Cell manufacturers (isn't ATL in your general area?) Replace it about once a year or when you think of it. This works very well guys. |
Try the cleaning isle at the local food store. Look for a Stainless scouring pad. Cut a piece off and shove it into the breather tube.
