Distributor De-bug Advice Needed
I've been running a stock Ford points type distributor with MSD 6A and it's been working fine. I decided to put in a pointless distributor that should perform up to my 6K redline, and got a ProComp PC-7003. Everything went together fine with the rotor pointing at the same sparkplug wire (#2), but I have no spark. Same coil and plug wires, and I'm using one of those in-line spark checkers, that previously worked. Before instaling the distributor, I did
take off the rotating 8 point star wheel and the magnetic base plate in order to install lighter advance springs. When I re-installed the outer magnetic plate, I made sure its 8 star points on its I.D. had .007" clearance with each rotating star point. I've pulled off the MSD wires as the distributor is designed to work by itself. I have +12 volts from the ignition going to the positive terminal on the MSD Blaster coil along with the red wire from the ProComp distributor. The black wire from the ProComp goes to the negative terminal on the coil. That's the way ProComp says to hook it up; pretty simple. Has anybody had a similar problem? It's got to be one of two components, either the pickup coil or the module. Ohm the coil to make sure it's not open, if that's OK then it has to be a faulty module.
Since it's new and you had it apart, I'd double check the pickup connections to the module and look for any wires that possibly got pinched during assembly. Not a bad idea to have a spare module and pickup on hand anyway or better yet an entire spare distributor. |

Thanks for two good tips. The pickup coil must be attached to the underside of the stationary ring(I'll look for two wires), and the module is clearly evident as 4 wires with 90 deg. spade connectors plug into it. I was worried that I might have pulled a wire loose while trying to pull the mag ring out. The module appears to be rivetted in place with 2 hollow brass rivets. I wonder if ProComp sells spare modules and distributor rotors? I checked it again last night by attaching a grounded spark plug directly to the high voltage wire from the coil to the distributor cap. If I got a spark here, it would isolate the problem to the distributor cap. I've got an MSD 6A in place, but it failed last fall and I had to pay MSD to fix it. So, I've got the wiring planed with a jumper wire or two to bypass the MSD if I have a no-spark situation again.:D |
Ok, I took the dizzy apart and checked the the two leads going to the coil. Result, infinite resistance - open circuit - no good. Now, to contact ProComp and see if they will exchange it or give me a new dizzy coil.%/

The point type distributor uses the white wire from the MSD box, with magnetic or optical (?) it is not used for magnetic or optical triggering.
