Rearend squeal
Hi Folks,
My Superformance is making a gawd aweful high pitched squeal from somewhere in the rearend. I have a fear of getting under a rumbling bigblock that is on jacks. I can just picture it crushing me and then running through the back wall of my dining room. The end result is a rich but unhappy wife. Does anybody have a car lift that I can put my car on and run it for a minute or two? Mark |
Lets start from the top.
1) does it happen going over bumps? 2) does it happen in gear 3) does it happen in neutral 4) does it happen under load 5) is it continuous or intermittent The more details the better, new or older chassis? |
does it happen during aggressive acceleration?

Steve Seitz has a lift in his garage. He's in Heath. I have a trailer you can use if you fear driving it there.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the response. My car is SPF 1941. It was built in 2004 and has a little over 13,000 miles on it. The squeal starts at 5 mph and continues through out the cars speed range. It never gets any louder but it is continous. I cannot here it over the sidepipes but if I push the clutch in and drop the RPM's to 1100, which is idle for my car, the squeal is audible over the road noise and will stop below 5 MPH. Bumps make no difference. Taking it out of gear at any speed and letting the engine idle make no difference. Under a load makes no difference. I live on a hill and can roll down the ally and here the squeal with the engine idling. It sounds metallic like a brake rotor squealer but pulling on the brake handle makes no difference, there is no squealer on my system. My first thought was that the piece of junk emergency brake pads were misaligned and causing one of the pads to slightly rub on the rotor so I corrected the gap between the pads and rotor and it's still squealing. The emergency brake has new pads so no rivets are rubbing on the rotor. I am concerned that it may be a half shaft problem. Mark SPF1941 |
wow sounds like the ebrake, next time roll down the hill and pull on your emergency brake cable and see if it goes away.
Half shaft would start clicking if it is worn out, might squeal if out of lubricant, but since it does not consume lubricant where did it go. my next guess was a non lubricated u-joint on the drive shaft. To bad you dont live in houston i have a 4 post lift. If you jack the rear end up with the car in neautral front wheel blocked and turn the rear wheels by hand do you hear it? If so it should be easy enough to find. Stupid question but you are sure your brake shoes are not worn out? Is one of the retaining/anti rattle springs broke or installed incorrectly? |
Squeal means friction. Friction means heat. Get it up on a hoist and and look for baked off paint near/around the bearings on the 3rd member. Also, look for centrifugal grease splatter (bearing fails, seal fails, grease spins out).
Good luck, DD |
check your e brake, it might be stuck on, the e brake on the willwood system can get stuck very easy.

Yes, have lift.
I live in McKinney west of 75 (Stonebridge) Lift currently occupied by lifeless Boss 302. Need a few days warning to get her down. Sent PM Best, Paul |

Hey,
Thanks for the reply's. Eric...you rock! I live very close to White Rock Lake. Can you please send me an email? jetgeek@sbcglobal.net. |
Mark,
Are you taken care of? Miles is correct. I have a 4 post with internal hydraulic jack and a jack stand tray. I'm pulling the Mustang engine this weekend, so I'm in greese monkey mode if you want to investigate. I'm sure Miles and John Shelton will want to drop by to drink all of my beer again. Steve |
Steve,
Thanks for the invite. What time will you be finishing up tomorrow? Just curious, so Miles and I will know about when to show. |
Do your wheels have "dust covers"?

Superformance Bulletin
Mark, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine in Fort Worth who owns a current Superformance. He utilizes the Superformance.org site for all issues. He commented to me that Superformance has a bulletin out on later models concerning the rear caliper bracket bolts. They tend to back out and rub on the wheels. Superformance recommends they be removed, locktite red utilized on the threads and reinstalled. This would be something to look at when the snake is on the lift. FYI-Colin

Sorry I'm just catching up here, but if there's any beer left, I'll be happy to help you boys out. At least I'm good for somethin!
