rattling mufflers
 
My mufflers rattle real loud at idle and can hear them at highway speed. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if there is anything i can do to fix it. I don't want to replace the mufflers. They look good and sound really good at wide open throttle.

There doesn't seem to be a good fix for this problem. Many of us have drilled holes in the back side of the mufflers and screwed a large metal screws into the muffler to hopefully securing the diverter inside that is rattling.
I've had no real success fixing with this problem, I think the mufflers are just not well made. Someday I'll replace them both with something good.......but for now let them rattle. By the way, mine only rattle when they are cold.

factory five has this problem also, i was told it was how the mufflers were welded inside the pipes. what i did was drill a hole near the weld on the underside of the pipe to locate the edge of the muffler it may take a fe holes to find the right spot then i drilled a large enough hole and plug welded it , i then ground down the weld and used high temp ceramic paint to match the coating on the side pipe. the screws are alot easier though.

Yes, it's very common. if George Cochran (Master Touch) ever comes through with my pipes, I'll have my problem solved.

This has plagued me with Hurricane #6. What really pi$$es me off is it started right after I paid $300 for ceramic coating. The baffles were merely tack-welded inside the pipes and those tacks have broken loose. I stuck a camera inside and the broken tack was barely 1/8" in size, not nearly enough for this application. I tried the screw trick and that didn't work long term. I don't want to cut and re-weld the entire circumference of the pipes, so...in the next couple of weekends, I am going to do what Wrench suggest above, hopefully for the (*&^% last time.

Thanks for all the info. I will try an put a couple of screws in it. If that doesn't work will have to try wrenches idea. By the way the mufflers start rattling when they get hot.

I've had this problem twice. It happened first after about 3000 miles. I ordered a new set of side pipes from Shell Valley (supplier to HM) and it happened again after less than 2000 miles. I called Dana @ Shell Valley and he said he never heard of this problem before. Yeah, right!:(
I've tried the metal screw trick, but haven't gotten it fixed yet.

My FFR (#6102) has this problem also...(hooker headers).I am thinking about cutting the mufflers off (mild steel)and rewelding straight pipe in place....I don't have a radio.....

This is the first I've ever heard of this issue. (none of my customers have complained of my mufflers doing this - good thing).

I think the issue is difference in expansion between inside and outside and inadequate connection between the two. I cut open a set of rattlers and they had split right around the inside pipe. I don't think you'll see that on yours Eric.
