TKO 600 Mechanical Speed Sensor Leakage
 
I have noticed I am getting some oil leakage around the plastic plug that is installed in the mechanical speed sensor port on the drivers side of my transmission. I have tighten the allen head bolt as far as she goes and no change. Anyone faced this before and have suggestions to fix?

It should have an o-ring on the plug. Pull the plug and replace the o-ring.

Probably the crimp on the cable leaking.

The "Plastic Plug" is for shipping only. You need to obtain the aluminum plug with the o-ring from Tremec if you do not use a mechanical speedo drive.

Sam - thanks for that info. I pulled out the plastic plug and the o ring was fine. I was surprised that this plastic plug was all that was provided so makes sense there is something more robust to install if you have no plans to use this port. I purchased the transmission from Joe Dederichs so will give him a call and see what he can chase down for me.

Take and old speedo cable, cut the core off and braze up the hole in the fitting. A new "O" ring, install the end fitting and you are good to go.

Doug, Joe will fix you up. If he needs a hint, show him this:
" Mechanical speedometer pick-up
All TKO’s have the same Ford style speedometer pick-up bore located on the driver-side rear extension. You must use a Ford T-5 speedometer cable end. (Note: If you are using the electronic pick-up, you must plug the hole for the mechanical speedometer with a metal plug, part # 30-360-1X available from authorized TREMEC
distributors to prevent oil leaks. Do not use the black rubber shipping plug."

Sam - got an email from Joe and he indicated I have the right plug - he replaced the shipping plug with the one I have in now and recommended by TREMEC for race apllications. In looking at the design they could have done this better. With the plug you still end up with oil standing on top and relying on this super O ring to prevent any leakage. I have cleaned up the sealing surface and will see how this works. If it does not then time for some re-enginnering as others have suggested.

Ok, well you said plastic plug earlier. Maybe look for a fatter o-ring. Also Steeda makes this part for Mustangs. Sold by Summit. All else I can suggest is don't overfill. Normal oil level is just to the bottom of the fill port on the passenger side ...

Looks like I go this fixed for now. I pulled out the plastic plug and found the plug still had the mold seams along the seaing area. So could have slightly raised the plug in this area off the sealing surface. So filed these down and reinstalled and works fine so far.
