Title Registration issue - Need some help!
Tx DMV is saying they cannot title my Backdraft due to the manufacturer "is not NHTSA approved"
Here's the backstory. Back on July 10th I went to the Collin County tax office in Frisco to register the car. (as a 65 replica) Everything went smooth. They issued a window sticker, set up my custom plate application, issued a paper plate, and took my payment. I had also had the safety inspection done at the DMV waiver office in Plano. I get a call from the Frisco tax office saying to come pick up all your original paperwork and go to the regional DOT office in Carrollton and work it out. Before I go to Carrollton, can anyone tell me if they have run into this before and offer any advice. I am guessing someone in the title department is not familiar with kit cars and we will be able to work this out. I want to get this done in one trip, so if you can give me any guidance, I would appreciate it. Mike PS; I tried to explain to them (Frisco, tax office) there are numerous Backdrafts, FFR's, Superformance, etc cars already registered in TX, but it's out of their hands. |
Please keep us posted on the developments with your dilema. I had heard from some reliable sources that the DVM was going to be cracking down on replicas...hope this works out for you!
Have you looked in the registration forum? Try this: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/registration-forum/ From what I understand, the FIRST step you take is to get your insurance card written with the year and make of car you want the title to say...then you take it to be inspected and make sure the inspection report specifies year/make exactly as the insurance card....then you take all that to the county courthouse to apply for the title, along with all your receipts...this is the first I've heard of the issue you've encountered. Do a search but in a nutshell. Is it a new backdraft? If so it should be titled in the year it was built as an assembled vehicle. In other words a 2013 assmebled vehicle and under remarks it says 1965 replica. Same process as if you pieced together a farm truck and was getting it titled or a box truck. Nobody is out to get replica's.
You are the assembled, you cordinated the chassis and engine installation. texas is very easy. dont make it hard. Quote:

Read my earlier posts on what worked for me in Ellis County. It really does depend a lot on the person you talk to. The Waiver Office here told me they didn't do these inspections any more and referred me to the new Street Rod/Custom Vehicle process on the DMV website. That's what I did and went to an ASE certified technician for the inspection. Also I think it was a help to take a copy of the DMV bulletin with me to the tax office and pointed out the process if followed and then gave them all the paperwork noted in the bulletin.

Having tagged several old cars with year-of-manufacture plates, I can tell you that those people in Carrollton REALLY REALLY know their stuff. Bring crisp, sharp xerox copies of everything (they will scan it all into their databases).

In AR, I could not get an ANTIQUE plate but got a STREET ROD plate and it it titled as 1965 Roadster. My car was bought new by me in Nov. 2010.

hello I just got the bad news on my cobra they said it was not on the list

You are not trying to register a homemade vehicle as described in 25.13 you are trying to register a replica as described in 25.14 It seems to me that the homemade paragraph is causing the problem... Finding a competent clerk that can understand the difference between replica and homemade. I think having a copy of the manual with you and all relevant papers (MCO if built new, photos of your car as well as photos of original shelby proving replica status etc.) |
also in section 25-13, if the vehicle was used and came from out of state, all you need is a out of state vehicle identification certificate (VI-30) issued by state appointed safety inspection station.
Similarly a purchase of a used registered vehicle within the state should be a simple title transfer. |
