Texasdoc, you are the man!
With the transmission through the clutch splines, I pulled on the clutch fork with a ratchet strap to disengage the clutch. Using a forceful push, the transmission slid all the way in. I now agree with everyone that the plastic alignment tool gets it close but not close enough. Many thanks to everybody for the helpful suggestions, and to H-Rod for stopping by last night to help. You guys are great! |
Texas Doc should know. He's had his transmission in/out 743 times just in the past 12 months. :-). Oh and he's pretty smart too.

I'm not putting needles in there, the bushing works just fine, for me.
