Which Big Block?
Ford Racing offers two SVO 460 blocks. One has a deck height of 9.000, with 4-bolt mains (M-6010-A500). It has a different bolt pattern for the heads, and uses the Ford Pro Stock canted valve aluminum heads (M-6010-E460) with huge 2.45 intakes and 1.88 exhausts.
The other block is 10.32" tall, with 4-bolt mains on #2,3,& 4 (M-6010-A460). It uses the standard CJ, Edelbrock or Blue Thunder heads. Is there any advantage to using the shorter deck height block? Those heads sound like they could really wake up the 460. Thanks Venom_S |
How about Ford's 514 Crate Engine? I just installed one in a new Superformance and it is awesome!

The 514 (my choice too) has a 2 bolt main
Can anyone tell me why it matters? I always heard that with SB Chevys , the 4 bolt main was stronger, is this relevant to the 460 motors also??
My fuel injection is going on the 514 at the West Coast factory, RIGHT NOW ! (5-21-02) I will miss her maiden runs, but what the heck, I did not have to do much of the hard work either, except running down about 100 special items for her  |
I would imagine the shorter deck height is lighter, and would normally have higher compression.
The taller deck would most likely allow you to run a better rod ratio. -steve in nj- |
Venom, If you install that Pro Stock BB in you Cobra you will be the Baddest guy at any car show and cruise night. But when you take it to the track (not dragstrip) every sb will piss all over your car. Those huge valves are meant for high rpm power and you don't want to wind up like the Boss 429 Mustangs, Killers at the strip but pigs on the road.

Venom S:
Headers won't fit the 9.000 deck either. This is purpose buit for Pro Stock racing. |
Thanks everyone. Talked with an engine builder and he said what everyone mentioned here - the block and heads are mmeant for very high rpm's (8000). For the street, the engine would get beat by a Honda Civic on Nitrous. It requires a huge roller cam (.800+ lift) and high compression (14:1+) in order to work correctly.
