Need some help in DFW
Hey guys, I'm seriously thinking about building an FFR MKII, but I'm concerned that the car won't go down my driveway with the low ground clearance. Some guys at FFCobra.com suggested that I might find a helpful Cobra owner in the DFW area to bring their car over and take a look.
It's a new concrete driveway, we just moved into our new house earlier this year, but there's a pretty steep angle where the drive meets the street. I'd hate to finish building an FFR and then realize that I can't get it out of the driveway! I'm not asking anyone to try scaping down my driveway, I'd just have a better idea if it is possible if there were a similar car there. An FFR would be nice because I've never seen one, but I would think any Cobra replica would work. I've actually never seen any type of Cobra replica up close. I'm in Cedar Hill, near Joe Pool Lake. I believe there was a convoy to Austin that started here this past February, I'm about 5 minutes from that meeting place. Thanks, I'd love to see one of your cars. |

Joel - welcome to the club. You probably have a legitimate concern. I have a rear entry garage and the alley grade is a few feet higher than the house/garage. In my Unique, I am not able to pull staight in or out onto the alley surface without draging the bottom of my bell housing. It is ok though if I hit that area at a 45 degree angle which allows the left front wheel and the bell housing to cross this hump at the same time. Some of the ERA guys here in Dallas have the bottom of their bell housing cut straight across instead of rounded and this helps some. I may do this at some time in the future.
You have to be careful in a Cobra with the low clearance - street or parking lot speed bumps are definately out. Send me your address and phone number and I may try to drive down to Cedar Hill some nice weekend day. It is probably about 35 minutes from my house. |

Steep drive ways and speed bumps. I hate 'em, but what you gonna do. A few years ago I actually MOVED from a place like that. The Austin Healey 3000 is lower than the Cobra, I just hated tearing up the underside.

If not, you can sort of play around with a 90" 2x4 and a couple of 4-1/2" blocks. I did this same thing to check my drive and it wasn't even an issue. My scatter shield also hangs down at about 4 inches I believe. |
Joel, Welcome to Texas, make sure you attend the next DFW Cobra Club meeting. They are the first Saurday of each month at different locations, usually in Dallas/635 area, stay tuned and join the fun. db
