Blake; Have you had a chance to talk to your friends at the Gristmill?
|
I have not heard back from County Line BBQ about parking, but since there are some issues about interior space and service, I thought I would spend some time looking at other places.
I don't know if we have discussed this online before, but sometimes we hold our local cobra lunches at Carlos and Charlie's and have had pretty good luck there. The parking lot adjacent to the building might be too small, but there is a much larger one across the drive that we could probably use. I doubt they do much lunch business in Feb and they might be happy to have us. Any thoughts? If we don't like that, I checked in the Austin yellow pages under Banquet and there is over a page of places. I am heading out of town for Christmas, but when I get back I will go check out some more places for lunch. Also BTW, I sent a few emails inquiring about the old airport, but I have not heard anything. The odds of us being allowed to do anything there(especially racing) are slim to none, but we figured at our last meeting that it couldn't hurt to ask. If I hear something there I will be sure to post it. |
I may or may not have a new Cobra by the Spring event, but my 2 cents....let's not make the lunch a banquet! We don't want to get tied up sitting and eating lunch. I would think you could find some burger joints, etc. that we could get in and out of and have more fun with the cars. The idea of eat stops on the poker run seemed a neat idea, as everyone could grap something on different stops vs everyone all trying to eat at one time. Then have the Barb Q back and beverages back at the hotel that night!

Gary; I agree with you. If we decide to cruise to the Gristmill River Restaurant in New Braunfels, there are many places to stop for gas, food, and drinks.
My current thoughts, not yet approved by the Austin bunch, are: Leaving the Origin parking, the trip down to New Braunfels will take us through some nice hill country roads and small towns (Dripping Springs, Wimberly, and San Marcos). I expect that everyone can navigate (via a provided cruise map) on their own pace, stopping for gas and refreshments. I estimate that the one way trip will take one and half to two hours. When we get to New Braunfels, everyone can do what they want. Eat at the Gristmill or other resturants, or visit the tourist shops. The trip back to the Hotel is optional. A straight shot back to Austin via I35, or back track on the original route taken. Dinner can be had at local resturants around the hotel or at the hotel (all optional). Blake; The Gristmill area parking lot is huge, do you think the Gristmill would block off an area for us? I'll be reviewing the trip with the Austin members at our January meet. Any other suggestions would be apprciated. |
What about driving down to Llano and eating at Cooper's BBQ? Nice drive..about an hour- great food...not a lot of parking area though.
|
Ray; Did you remember anything about Cooper's BBQ parking area surface and size? I can drive down and check it out if you think they can handle the Cobra bunch.
As for the cruise, what route would you recommend? Taking 71 to Llano, then going through Willow City, Fredericksburg, Johnson City, and back to Austin. This route might be longer than the New Braunfels route. I'm still planning, so any other recommendations or comments are welcome. |
We were at Coopers BBQ in Llano back in November (the day after the Sellards wedding). If you weren't wearing "RealTree" camo, driving a Pick'em up truck with "big mud tars" and four little bambi legs sticking up outta the truck bed, you were a "danged ol' foreigner!"
Well - guess deer season is over by February, so it should be okay ;) And sorry, I don't remember much about the parking lot, except that its on a BIG busy highway and wouldn't hold more than a couple dozen pick'em up trucks -- there may be space fore and aft for overflow but I wouldn't swear to it... |
ed,
got some info on Gruene...give me a call when you can: office: 830-995-4900 cell: 512-560-1540 |
Blake;
Keep us posted on the Gruene parking status with the owner of Rockin' R River Rafts. --------------- TCC Members (your response please); We have two options. We can go completely "dutch" or we can organize a "party menu". That will give people 3-4 choices for a set price which includes drink, salad, gratuity, etc. advantages: Party Menu: food comes faster and we are in and out. dutch: going to take longer. -------------- Blake; What would the cost be for the "party menu" per person? Any up front money needed? |
Party menu.............
works for us.

Looks like a re-focus in in order!!
Austinites,
It appears that Dee has just been handed a pair of loaded dice by our two "potential" hotels. I am of the opinion the Austin group REALLY needs to join forces and concentrate HEAVILY on finding a host hotel as a TOP priority immediately!! We now have a YEARLY event that is scheduled to start in AUSTIN in 56 days, and we do not have a base yet!!!! I will be glad to start looking for a base hotel in the Dallas metroplex area on January 1st, 2003 as a fall back is case this is the year that our event "just fell through the cracks". I am NOT trying to cause any problems, but I am not about to let this die on the vine, and I really can't do much in Austin from here! John Russell |
Yo Austin!
John; Hang in there buddy! I sure that the Austin guys will find a base hotel.
