Should we try to support some charity w/our event?
Guys,
I've been to a number of car shows in Austin that are super lame compared to last year's Austin event and this year's looks like its going to be just as big (if not bigger) than last year's. Anyway, I was just thinking that we could probably do some simple local advertising and ask people that come out to look at the Cobras to donate $5 in admission fee that we could then turn around and do some good with locally. Just a thought... |

This has been discussed once before. We the membership feel that it is in Our best intrest that we not. We want to keep it simple, so many of us do so much for others and groups or charities, a lot of us are active in several outher car clubs. So we kinda want to keep this one fun, if you notice we don't have any structure, we just try to get tougher once a year. to have fun

I think we also want to be careful. A couple of years back I know our local SCAT club had to spend some cash because we weren't setup correctly for a club and the IRS wants its part.

I personally don't want to do any more than we currently have planned. While the idea is a noble one, I feel this places a burden on our club "to perform" somewhere for a specific time, for a $. I want to be around " my fellow club members", not a bunch of other gawkers. When you inject money into the equation, the "fun factor" of our club drops off dramatically. We have members coming in from all over to be a part of what we have done in the past 3 years, and I just think this would be counter-productive at this point. I doubt I would make the trip next year if we expand to include this type of idea into an informal club that requires no dues and has no written by-laws to govern us. I do not want the responsibility/liability if something goes wrong. These are just my thoughts, but I also think trying to interject "new" ideas of any kind with only a month is a mistake! I think there are plenty of other charitable events that we all attend and take part in. I would like to keep this one with the same "spirit" as in the past. Local events are fine, but this is our state meet, primarily for the members and their families. If someone walks up off the street to look, fine, but lets keep this Austin meet mostly for the members. Just my opinion.:D

Ok, agree trying to do something this year is too aggressive, but I still think we could do *something* next year. I'll give you a for instance than I'll shut up. Once a year a guy in Austin puts on a little car show & ride for the Sunshine Kids. These are all very sick kids who get a big kick out of taking a ride around town in a cool car. I've done this in the past and it was a blast and the kids really enjoyed it. We don't have to do anything involved w/money, that was just the first thing that occured to me & seemed easiest. That said, I don't want to rock the boat with this. Maybe this isn't the right crowd/event to do this sort of thing with(?) and I understand all of us do plenty to help out lots of different charities. On the other hand, I know I really don't do that much and could certainly do more. Shutting up now. |
Look, I'm only a moonshining outsider participating in a FUN event. But, I have watched (from afar) the DVSF turn into NOT a Cobra event or even a family weekend bash, but into a "Jerry Lewis Telethon". We get together to have FUN. When the demand for money is forced on people, it not longer is fun and becomes an obligation or we resent being forced into the charity. Not taking anything away from DV, Jenny, et al. But let me decide what charities I support. I had enough of the "United Way" union dues in a previous life. Let me give what I want, to who I want. I'm happier and the organizations I support will get A LOT more.

If you do the ride for the sunshine kids this year, please post the info about it or email me, because I would really like to participate. (insert joke about car being done in time here ) That sounds like great event for us guys in Austin to do as one of our monthly meets. |
