TCC does well at Run & Gun!
 

Wow!!! What a weekend we had. I'd like to extend a special thanks to Jay for helping get the Backdraft team through our first Run & Gun event.

We all had a great time and brought home some trophies to top it off.

Jay won the Street - Power Adder class in Auto Cross while finishing 2nd on the Road Coarse and 2nd in the Drags. I guess that ole' dog has some skills left after all...

Clois finished 2nd in the Pro - Quick 8 and 4th in the Bracket 1 event on Drags. He really likes that whole Drag thing.

Thanks Roberty for your help this weekend---Great catfish and fries. For anyone reading this that may be considering a Cobra, I want you to know the boys from the backdraft put on quite a show. Tony Martin had never participated in a drag race in his life but performed exceptionally well in his BackDraft Cobra. These cars appear to be very well made and are not intimidated at a race track. Myself and several others were very impressed with the BackDraft entries.

A very good and SAFE time was had by all.

Boudy, Thanks for the run down on how the TCC did. I'm somewhat confused. Is there more than one Overall Top Dog?

Is there more than one quick 8? Those used to be just as they state "Overall" (out of everybody) and only one category. Quick 8, meaning the quickest 8 times during time trials ran a heads up shootout. I asked these questions to Bill Belcher, after I received his report below. So far no answer from him.

A Superformance customer from Wisconsin, Bill Belcher, gave me this following report when I asked him how R and G went:

Sorry you couldn't make it, we all missed you.
The Back Draft team only had one car in competition and one for display, the competition car ran in pro with a small block with a super victor and a accusump system, car had no windshield and ran a 1.0745 on the road course, car was strong the driver was good they had a large support team there.
Turn out was good about 40 car pre-registered and an additional 40 showed.
Cars of interest 4 Dragons, 3 GT-40's (Roaring Forties), 2 Lola T-70's, 2 Kirkham's with blown 4.6 cammer engines only one competed he was in street smallblock,
1 ultralight, 1 carbon fiber factory five with 420cid (Pete Torque) and Dave Koepp my friend from last year in his blue and white factory five cobra with my old motor Dave took 3rd place Top Dog Street Small Block.
As for me I ran in Pure Street Big Block this year they now have a new class called prepared street in 4&6 cyl, small block, big block, and power adder which they are allowed to run any DOT legal tire (basically race tires, including Hosier R303's) and can change tires for the different event.
I ran my old Michelin's (4 years on these tires so far) here's how I ended up doing:
Road Course 1st Place, Road Course Top Dog Second Place (edge out by the T-70 Lola in Small Block Street Prepared), Autocross First Place, Autocross Top Dog First Place (closest competitor 2+ sec behind), Drag Racing Quick 8 Second Place (red lighted on the old man Pete Torque wouldn't have had it any other way), and
First Place Overall Top Dog. Other highlights I ran a 11.34 & 127.8 mph with lots of wheelhop (Backdraft ran 116 mph but I didn't get his time, he approached me later after the drags and asked me details about my motor).


Congrats to Jay and Clois for carrring the TCC banner. Bill Bonadio always runs strong, is he a TCC member? Great job my Tony Martin, I think that is probably the fastest time turned by a Run and Gun participant. That is impressive. Whas that a standard BD car without a windshield? Would have loved to see him drive, as I understand he won Lemans as a Pro driver. Or was the Reg? Hope to see them at the Austin event.

Hi Doug: Glad to hear from you while sorry you couldn't make it. However, should see you at No Problem. My wife's family lives in Donaldsonville, so as you can imagine, I'll get zero grief for making that trip. Sure, we had fun but since it's never in short supply, there's more...

Anyhow, we ran the Pro Big Block class since we were over 400 cubes. When registering, they told us that Prepped would be fine but we were later bumped up do to tires not being DOT.

Geeze, there are more classes than a guy can count. There's an Overall Top Dog for the whole thing and then a Top Dog in each event. After the Top Dogs, there are the winners of each class in each event. The Drags were a bit different with Quick 8 and Brackets. Mid 11's put us into the Quick 8 but there was no beating the Juice Man, Bonadio. Hope this helps explain the awards I listed above.

The guys drove in from Florida. Reg and Tony (BDR owners) and Frank who is Reg's dad. The car was a production car pulled from Reg's floor a week earlier. They changed to solid motor mounts, upgraded it to M3 half shafts, swing arms, brakes. It lost the windshield and found a 600HP 418 with accusump and a set of slicks too.

THERE ARE ACTUALLY 3 QUICK 8'S, PRO, PREPARED AND STREET.

GARY, KEITH WAS RUNNING WELL AND THE NEW KEITH CRAFT MOTOR WAS GREAT. HE ONLY GOT TO MAKE ONE TIMED RUN DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL GREMLIN DURING ROAD COURSE TRIALS. I DIDN'T GET HIS TIMES ON AUTO X AND ROAD COURSE.

AT THE DRAGS HE RAN AN 11:70 ON STREETS. MADE QUICK 8 STREET FINALS. LOST TO PETE TORK AS EVERY OTHER COBRA DID. THEN DIALED IN AT 11:70 IN THE BRACKETS AND THEN TORE UP EITHER THE REAR, TRANNY OR BOTH. IT IS AT DREWS SHOP NOW.

A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. NOW JUST GET THAT BEAUTIFUL CAR OF YOURS THERE NEXT YEAR:)

Guys,

Just want to set facts straight.

My 274" Buick V6 took Quick 8 and Bracket. Best time was 10.71 using no Power adder.

It also took 2nd place Top Dog due to a Red Light (uggh).

Great job Bob. Cogradulations, that's getting down to the other end pretty expeditiouslly.:D :D

Is your car that Maroon one that's really loud?

Yup... Its the NOISY red one:)

I asked a buddy of mine that is familiar with my motor why its so loud with open pipes and he said its the port size. I took it for a ride after I put the baffles back in and what a relief...

Were you the #6 car with the chainsaw engine? just kidding:D. I couldn't hear my own engine run when I was by you.
What did it run for time on the roadcourse?

Actually the car is a lot better at road racing than me. The only other time I've tried it was at R & G 2001. I think I ran a 121 with my BFG Steet tires. Autocross wasn't anything to write home about either a 39 as I remember.

The "mini" motor is much less noisy with its baffles in but also loses around 50HP.

I'm thinking about going to one of the local tracks near ATL to get some "instructions". The problem is I really need a full width roll bar in order to get an instructor in it.

Any suggestions?

You sound about like me, it was the first time I'd ever been on a roadcourse, autox, or dragstrip. The car was good on the RC and too stiff in front in AutoX.

Re: the rollbar issue, I met up with Larry Rea (he and his son Lucas used to run E-M's at R&G) and I'm getting the full cage from his car next week.

This is too much fun!

I remember your car now as its got a dry sump like mine. Yours is in the trunk right? I put mine up in the engine bay (made the stainless lines easier to make). Nice car!
