Keith, I have heard nothing but good things from people that have your motors. I am shall we say a champagne test with a beer budget! My intentions are to get into this hobby and then ante up a tad slowly. My first Cobra I found second hand from a guy up north that had financial problems, my gain his loss. The car is really setup nice but not the horsepower figures you guys talk about. Now from launch I hook up like tomorrow, but don't have the legs from 60-70 to outdo a Viper probably, 1/4mile bring it.

I am thinking of doing a authentic 427FE next round but we shall see. A BB would be fun I must admit.

You guys must have lots of money! But, heck you can't take it with ya, right?

Hey Keith, we have very much the same engine, couple of questions. What cam profile did you use and what do you charge for this motor ? We build our own sprint car engines & my 428. I may have a guy interested in yours so, I'll give him the specs & apx.,..... cost.

We have been using the hydraulic roller cams with great success in these engines and do not have to worry about break-in or loosing a lobe. We are using cams in the 244 to 254 duration on the intake and 254 to 264 on the exhaust{@.050}. The gentelman that posted above was right on the price and that included every part from carburetor to oil pan, damper to flywheel of the dyno. Hope this helps a little. Thanks Keith

Do you have any experience with Webers (IDA's) and the heads used above were the smaller valve 428 bore style? Wouldn't you know - I buy an engine and have it shipped from Dallas only to maybe ship it back! :CRY:

I just wanted to add that we've had our engine from Keith Craft in the car for about 7 months now and at 606 HP we've had no problems. According to my husband, first gear is really not much use anymore, but beyond that we've taken it everywhere from Sonic to Panoz Track Days at TMS. Alan loves this engine and has no regrets about that much motor in the car. Of course I've had to ask him to tone it down on the highway but as long as we leave the hood unlatched, 120mph handles well.

The heads were the Edelbrock 428 style with the 2.09/1.66 valves in our stage 2 form. We have some experience with the Webers on these engines and have worked with the cams to make the Webers work fine. The last one we did was a 427 .017 over with C7AE heads that we did some mild porting on and a flat tappet camshaft. This engine made about 530 on torque and 545HP. Great numbers for sure Keith,,and it seems like they will stay together.
What do you mean by stage 2 heads ? and what would be the approx hp loss by using a flat tappet/roller rocker cam set up ?

Stage 2 Heads
 
What we refer to as our stage 2 head is our in house work that icludes: checking and sizing the valves to the guides, our flow tested multiple angle valve job, special back-cut angles on the valves, hand porting the head to flow go numbers in the .300 to .600 lift range where most street strip heads will be most of the time, cc combustion chambers and mill to spec, flow check the intake and exhaust flow, deburr and chamfer the heads after milling and porting, check assemble heights, check valve springs for proper pressures for the application, positive stop seals, stainless one piece valves, spring seat cups, 10 degree retainers and 10 degree steel locks, dual valve springs. We then completely assemble with a build sheet on the heads. We use all of our own parts and start with a bare Edelbrock casting. We even have the intake valves made for us with the proper seat angle which is different than the factory for better flow. When you have been working on FE heads for 20 years you better have learned something about them. As far as the flat-tappets goes, if it is a hydraulic flat-tappet i think you will loose about 30HP but if it is a solid flat-tappet and the right one you may loose about 20 HP down low but may pick some up above 6000RPM if everything is the same. I hate having to break the camshaft in and then worry about the lobe going flat down the road. this is reason we run a lot of the hydraulic rollers. Hope this helps a little. Thanks Keith
