15's vs. polished 17's
Give me your opinions, thanks

15's are period correct ( what I have )
17's are not 15's have limited selection of high performance tires 17's are not I have 15's but wish for a better selection of tires. Most are running BFG which are S rated ( 112 mph ) which is a joke for these cars. The best high performace tires I could find are Pirelli's in the front and Nitto Drag radials in the back. 17's look a little funny at first but u get used to them & they grow on you. I still may have a set of 15's made up at some point so that I can run what tickles my fancy at that moment:cool:

Always a matter of tast and what you want to do with the car. We put 17 on our car and they look fine. Car will corner better due to less tire sidewall flex. Plus you have a larger selection of tires to pick from.

I put on the 17's tonight and had a bunch of guys over for their opinions. We put the 15's on and off a couple times, and I'm going with the 17's. 6 out of 6 guys like the 17's more. I can't wait to get out there and try them out. |

I'm considering doing the same on my SPF. Which brand of pin drive 17's did you go with and what did the set run you? I know the prices of performance tires, so no need to go there. I'm also considering selling my 15's to offset the cost of the 17's, as I'm pretty confident once I install the 17's there will be no going back. Thanks for the additional input and I'd love to see some pics. Are you going to stuff a 335 in the back? I've seen a few other SPFs with that combination....WOW! -Deano |

I went with the PSE 17's and I think they ran me about $2600 fully polished, but I can't remember exactly. I went with 315's on back because I've heard of some people having problems with rubbing with the 335. I will have pic's up soon. |

15s are nice if you want the classic look but for handling and really feeling the road, the 17s are great. I had 275s on the front and 335 on the back. They though they were a little rougher on city streets, once they warmed up, they really helped stick to the ground (you should still be able to break them loose at will).

It's a tough choice: looks vs. performance. From a handling standpoint the 17s are so obviously superior, the car becomes a different machine. I have identical sets of Compomotives in both 15s and 17s....a ridiculous expense, I suppose, but it's amazing to have the best of old and new, and compare them on the same car.

You might want to have the polished wheels Powder Coated Clear before you mount the tires.....

I have both- polished 15" Trigo's and polished 17" PSE's. The most pressing problem with the 15's is quality of tire(pr lack of it) and the massive torque down low that a 460 produces that will cause excessive wheelspin under 50mph. I run 285-40-ZR17 fronts and 335-35-ZR17 rears- Michelin Pilot Sports . I switched back to the 15's for a few weeks while waiting for a new set of rear tires to come in, and remembered just how scary they can be. All it takes to run the 335's is a good 4 wheel alignment set to SPF specs with a bit of negative camber in the rear. They stick, and are worth the extra expense, expecially if you EVER put the car on a track of any kind. John Russell SPF # 586 |
