CNC mills and lathes

Hi all,

Two quick questions in here ...

(1) I am investigating the purchase of a CNC lathe and a CNC mill for machining aluminium. Is there anyone here in Austin that has one so that I can look at it?

(2) I need to get some aluminium prototypes made and this particular part would be much easier to do in person. I know there was someone on here who ran a machine shop ... Anyone know who he is, and if he might have CNC machines?

Cheers,
-Neil.

Rob,
Just curious...if I were looking to have a part CNC machined...is it "as simple as"%/ exporting a CAD drawing to .DXF format and giving it to a machinist?

I find CNC machines facinating. I visited Phil at P.S. Engineering...he makes the Halibrand Replica wheels. He showed me all the machines and explained much of the process to me. It is cool stuff.

I have experience with 3D Modeling software but never considered having anything machined because I assume it to be VERY expensive.

To save costs, invest in and learn how to use a good drawing program. I am using Solidworks for a head design and it has been a real learning experience. I find ProE much easier but that is because I have used it more. I am sure Rob is lightyears ahead of me and can recommend better way

Rob,

I already work with a few different machine shops in various parts of the US, but for one particular item, I thought it would be easier to work with a local shop. The part is still in the design stage, so there is no formal drawing yet, and I need the shop to assist me with optimizing it. It is for this reason that I also want to get my own machines -- so that I can prototype without going back and forth in the mail for ages. I'm not looking to get a $100k machine, but something in the $10k range which I've already picked out and know will meet my needs.

Cheers,
-Neil.
